Rishi Sunak accidentally admits he’s a ‘total Coke addict’ in unearthed clip

Newly unearthed footage shows Rishi Sunak accidentally admitting to being a “coke addict” – then explaining he meant the drink.

The Chancellor, who is understood to be teetotal, made the mistaken admission during a visit to a school.

The Treasury say the footage, which resurfaced online today, is “very old.”

During the clip, Mr Sunak told a pair of teenage boys: “I’m a coke addict. A total coke addict”

He then quickly clarified: “Coca-Cola addict. For the record. Just to be totally clear. I am a Coca-Cola addict. I have seven fillings to show for it.

He then continued to explain, at some length.

He said: “So now…so yeah, exactly, I could get in trouble. So I genuinely do have seven fillings because I got through a lot of the stuff when I was young, so people should not…don’t, don’t, don’t do that.”

He added: “But I have one a week. I’m only allowed one a week. So I’m an enormous Coca-Cola fan. Coke. Er yes. I won’t drink Diet Coke. No Coke Zero. Never any Pepsi.

“And actually my favourite drink is called Mexican Coke. Because you get it and it’s special Coke. It’s the only place in the world where it is made with cane sugar rather than high fructose corn syrup, for the people who are really interested in this kind of thing.”

While it’s true that Coca-Cola is flavoured with corn syrup in the United States, it’s a myth that Mexican Coke is the only variety flavoured with cane sugar.

In fact, the Coca-Cola company list the drink as being flavoured with sugar in a number of countries, including Australia, New Zealand and…the United Kingdom.

In the UK High Fructose Corn Syrup is known as Fructose Glucose Syrup – and the manufacture of it is strictly limited by the European Union.

Whether the make-up of UK Coke will change after Brexit remains to be seen – but for now, Sunak’s one-a-week is as close to Mexican Coke as you can get without importing it.
