Axar’s 1st Over Double | It was an eventful first over as Axar Patel continued from where he left off in the first essay as he clean bowled Zak Crawley off the first ball. Then off the second, there was a huge appeal against Jonny Bairstow and the umpire raised his finger. Bairstow went upstairs and that saved him. Unfortunately, his happiness did not last long as he was cleaned up for the very next delivery. He was looking to play for the turn and that is what did him in.

India has a 33-run lead which could be like gold, but the hosts would realise their batting has let them down. They will come back no doubt, but remember – India has to bat last on this strip. 1st Hour, Day 2 | 12 overs, 26 runs, 4 wickets — England has made a wonderful start to the day as they have dismissed Rohit, Rahane, Pant and Sundar. India, on the other hand, would not be too pleased with what has happened. The Motera strip is a spinner’s paradise! Leach vs Pant | Didn’t we wait for this? It is ‘the’ contest to look forward to. England as expected already has a spread-out field for Pant. It will not be easy for the left-handed dasher as the ball is turning and making strokeplay difficult. Surely, it could go either way.

He has to be patient and bowl good line and lengths consistently. The problem is one spinner cannot run through India. Again the team selection has led to the dismal show.

200 would be the first target for India though 150 looks to be a good total. It seems poor team selection has decided the fate of the match. As Harsha Bhogle said on commentary, they have picked a side for a Test in Edgbaston and not Ahmedabad.

England Plan: For the tourists, if they do not wrap up India maybe an hour after lunch – the game would be out of their grasp and they would be mindful of that. Also, England needs to get Rohit early because 30-45 minutes of him, things could go from bad to worse for Joe Root and Co quickly. Leach would be the key for England in the first two hours of day two.

India’s Plan: It is simple – they will look to bat and bat for as long as possible. It will not be easy on the tricky strip at Motera. On a pitch like this, a lead of 150 could make all the difference and the hosts would be well aware of that. The possibilities of the Test stretching till the fifth day is minimal.

Axar Patel was the star of the show for the hosts as he picked up six wickets on a Motera strip that assisted spin on day one, Ravichandran Ashwin also chipped in with three wickets to his name. The Indian openers got the side off to a steady start before Shubman Gill perished trying to pull a short ball from Jofra Archer. the big surprise was the dismissal of the local hero.
