The Blue Jays’ busy offseason continues, as Toronto acquired left-hander Steven Matz from the Mets, the club announced Wednesday night.

The Mets are getting right-handers Sean Reid-Foley, Yennsy Diaz and Josh Winckowski in the deal. Diaz (ranked 26th) and Winckowski (27th) were on MLB Pipeline’s list of the top 30 Blue Jays prospects. Reid-Foley has appeared in 21 big league games (13 starts) with the Blue Jays from 2018-20, posting a 4.40 ERA.

Matz, 29, is coming off a down year in 2020 in which he went 0-5 with a 9.68 ERA in nine outings (six starts). He had a 4.09 ERA from 2018-19 while making 30 starts in each season. He is scheduled to make $5.2 million in 2021.

Matz had been expected to begin the season in the Mets’ rotation alongside Jacob deGrom, Carlos Carrasco, Marcus Stroman and David Peterson. Seth Lugo would be an internal option to assume a starting role, though it’s possible the Mets are not done shaking up their rotation this offseason.
