WHAT TO McDO?

When you’re the best player on the planet, what do you do to get better?

“I think I check most of the boxes offensively, but defensively there’s stopping on pucks, getting involved and winning battles, getting in on the forecheck, winning face-offs,” said McDavid.

He obviously looks at how new Bruins captain and four-time Selke winner Patrice Bergeron does it, as well as Jonathan Toews and Sidney Crosby.

“The offensive instincts are going to be there, and now it’s being solid all over the ice,” McDavid said.

ALL HANDS ON DECK

Winger Joakim Nygard’s hand problems appear to be fixed after two surgeries over the past calendar year. He had his hand ripped apart blocking a shot against Calgary last Jan. 29, got it repaired but needed more doctor’s work back in Sweden.

“I had trouble with the movement in the hand and kept falling on it so had to get another one (surgery). It was the same thing when I was here for the playoffs. I couldn’t make a fist,” said Nygard, who didn’t play against Chicago.

He suffered a facial cut, had back issues, then the broken hand.

He only played 33 games and got no traction in his first NHL season.

“It was important to get some games in back in Sweden (after the surgery). I missed two or three weeks there but played 15 (and scored seven goals). Hopefully, I’m back and without injuries. It’s hard. It’s no fun doing all the rehab,” said Nygard, who’s on the bubble for a top-12 forward spot but probably will be on the 23-man roster, not the taxi squad.
