What is turf toe? Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes dealing with injury entering AFC Championship

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes cleared the concussion protocol ahead of the AFC Championship game against the Buffalo Bills, but another injury could hamper the former league MVP on Sunday night.

Mahomes, 25, is dealing with turf toe. The injury occurred last weekend in the AFC divisional round against the Cleveland Browns. Following the injury, Mahomes had a noticeable limp as he walked.

What is turf toe? Below is how Physiopedia defines the injury.

“Turf toe is an injury of the first metatarsophalangeal(MTP) articulation, due to hyperextension of the big toe, which leads to damage of the plantar capsuloligamentous complex. It may cause tearing or complete disruption of these structures.”

Mahomes, much like Bills quarterback Josh Allen, depends on his mobility to keep plays alive outside of the pocket. If the injury limits his mobility, Buffalo’s defense could have some success getting after the quarterback.

Jay Glazer reported on Sunday that Mahomes will wear a special carbon fiber orthotic to protect the injury from getting worse.

Keep an eye on the injury throughout the evening. It could play a role in the outcome of Sunday’s AFC Championship.
