Canadiens’ Joel Edmundson happy to start season with a long road trip

Joel Edmundson doesn’t mind that the Canadiens’ first six games this season are on the road.

GM Marc Bergevin acquired the 6-foot-4, 227-pound defenceman from the Carolina Hurricanes during the off-season in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick and then signed Edmundson to a four-year, US$14-million contract.

The Canadiens are Edmundson’s third team in the last three seasons after he helped the St. Louis Blues win the Stanley Cup in 2018-19. This 11-day road trip is giving the 27-year-old a chance to get to know his new Canadiens teammates better.

For example, now he knows Brendan Gallagher is a fan of the Canadian rock band Nickelback.

After the Canadiens beat the Oilers 5-1 Saturday night in Edmonton, the team posted a locker-room video on Twitter with Gallagher shouting: “Play some Nickelback!”

His request was met.

“I’m learning stuff about everyone every day,” Edmundson said after practice Sunday as the Canadiens prepared to face the Oilers again Monday night. “Gally, he’s a character in the room. He’s fun to be around. … He’s always talking, he’s always chirping. Just a fun guy to be around.
