Timo Werner misses glorious one-on-one chance and extends Premier League goal drought to ten games as Chelsea beat Fulham

Timo Werner extended his Premier League goal drought to ten matches as Chelsea beat Fulham on Saturday.

Mason Mount scored the game’s only goal in the 78th minute to settle the London derby in the Blues’ favour.

He scored against Morecambe in the FA Cup last week, but hasn’t netted in the Premier League since November 7

Werner did not start the match and came on as a substitute three minutes before Mount converted.

Despite only being on the pitch for 20 minutes (including stoppage time), the German had chances to find the net.

The most blatant of these came right at the very end as Chelsea counter-attacked after a desperate Fulham corner.

Werner was played in one-on-one with 30 yards to run ahead of him before he confronted goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

…but failed to convert the glorious opportunity

He had the pace to strive for goal, but the man who was among the most clinical strikers in Europe last season was once again let down by his finishing.

Werner approached from the left as he charged forwards.

He then side-footed the ball aiming for the far post, but scuffed it and sent his shot far wide of the target.

When the ball crossed the goal-line, it was around six yards away from the post.

Mount scored the winner

On the whole, the game was a tight and turgid affair, with Scott Parker’s side reduced to ten men after Antonee Robinson saw red for a rash challenge on Cesar Azpilicueta.

Despite having to play more than 45 minutes with ten men, the Cottagers displayed the sort of resilience which is slowly but surely starting to compliment their strong attacking play.

However, the deadlock was finally broken on the banks of the Thames with little more than ten minutes remaining when Ben Chilwell’s cross was palmed away by Alphonse Areola straight into Mount’s path to volley home.

Frank Lampard’s side move up to seventh in the table after claiming a vital three points, to keep the pressure on the likes of Tottenham, Everton and Leicester in the race for the Champions League places.

For Fulham, they remain in the relegation places after their ninth defeat of the season and face a daunting visit to Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.
