Jamie Redknapp insisted Luke Shaw should have been sent off for a ‘dangerous and reckless’ challenge on Johann Berg Gudmundsson in the first half of Manchester United’s game at Burnley.

Referee Kevin Friend initially allowed play to continue when Shaw flew into a 50-50 with Gudmundsson – despite incensed appeals from Burnley players – and the hosts almost got a red card themselves moments later when Robbie Brady brought Edinson Cavani down outside the box at the other end.

Brady was the last man in defence and mistimed his challenge to thwart a threatening attack from United, which prompted VAR to take a look at the possible red card after he was just given a caution.

However, attentions turned back to Shaw’s challenge with Friend being urged to take another look at it on the monitor.

After almost five minutes of VAR looking at both incidents, Friend eventually rescinded Brady’s booking, brought play back and brandished a booking to Shaw.

But Redknapp believes the United defender’s tackle merited a red card.

Speaking at half-time the Sportsmail columnist told Sky Sports: ‘I think Luke Shaw will be a relieved man in the dressing room. In the current climate where the game is so sanitised, I think he gets a little bit of the ball but certainly goes over the top and catches him.

‘For me that is reckless and dangerous. I think he is really lucky.

‘I think the other one (Brady) could have been a red card if you didn’t have to take the play back because Shaw’s was certainly a foul.’

Gary Neville agreed that England international Shaw would’ve been thankful to escape with just a yellow.

He added: ‘I think Luke Shaw’s lucky because he follows through and his studs catch him. I think that’s the best (yellow card) Luke could have hoped for.’

‘I think both managers can be happy that they didn’t get a player sent off there.’
