Sen. Mitt Romney after Trump supporters riot in DC: ‘This is what the president has caused, this insurrection’

Sen. Mitt Romney recently predicted President Donald Trump’s calls for supporters to descend on Washington, D.C. just weeks before Joe Biden’s inauguration could “lead to disruption.”

On Wednesday, as Trump-allied Republicans sought to delay the certification of Biden’s decisive 306-232 Electoral College victory during a joint session of Congress, pro-Trump vandals stormed the U.S. Capitol and clashed with police.

Romney, as the building was placed on lockdown and officers rushed him and other lawmakers into the Capitol basement, summoned a reporter, according to The New York Times.

“This is what the president has caused today, this insurrection,” Romney said.

Earlier Wednesday morning, police arrested a handful of protesters on weapons and assault charges, according to the Washington Post.

Shortly after Vice President Mike Pence announced that he would defy Trump’s calls to unilaterally throw out some of Biden’s electoral votes, Trump’s supporters marched on the capitol and breached the building.

Trump on Twitter called on supporters to remain peaceful.

Several outlets have reported that gunshots have been fired inside the building and at least one person was injured, where National Guard and other law enforcement are trying to clear and secure the building.

Romney was the lone Republican to vote to convict Trump on an impeachment charge last year.

In recent weeks, Romney has consistently called on Trump to focus on his accomplishments during his last weeks in office, including helping push the COVID-19 vaccine, instead of advancing “loopy” conspiracies swirling around his election loss to Biden.
