Rarely has a year started with such trepidation. The coronavirus figures have become a horror story, with new infections regularly topping 50,000 and the death toll rising towards the numbers seen in the spring. Add the uncertainty created by the new variant of Covid-19 — which, until a few weeks ago, we were unaware of and which is more transmissible than the original — and it is enough to dampen even the most optimistic spirits.
We may have been glad to see the back of 2020 but, with experts warning that there is worse to come before the virus is brought under control, it not yet clear that 2021 will have much to commend it, at least in its early weeks.
