Here is Bergeron’s reaction to Chara leaving Bruins after 14 seasons

Zdeno Chara was the captain of the Boston Bruins since the day he signed with the franchise as a free agent in 2006.

Now that the veteran defenseman has left the B’s to join the Washington Capitals, the obvious choice to wear the “C” is forward Patrice Bergeron.

Bean: Cheap? Incompetent? Either way, B’s are worse without Chara

Chara officially has agreed to a one-year, $795,000 contract with the Washington Capitals. The veteran defenseman said goodbye to the Bruins and their fans in an Instagram post published Wednesday afternoon shortly before the Capitals announced the move.

Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald tweeted Bergeron’s reaction to the news of Chara’s departure:

Bergeron had been a teammate of Chara’s for the veteran defenseman’s entire Bruins career. Bergeron made his B’s debut in the 2003-04 season, and when Chara arrived two years later, the talented center was named an alternate captain.

These two players arguably are most responsible for the franchise’s success over the last 14 years, a run that includes one Stanley Cup title, three Cup Final appearances and 11 trips to the playoffs.

The Bruins will be Bergeron’s team for as long as the veteran forward remains in Boston.
