Harry Kane has reiterated his desire to try his luck as a kicker or punter in the NFL after he calls time on his football career.
The Tottenham and England striker – who named his dogs after quarterbacks Tom Brady and Russell Wilson – is an American football nut.
And while he is fully focused on firing for club and country, the 27-year-old says it would be a dream come true to one day swap the round ball for a prolate spheroid.
‘I think the main one I spoke about before is maybe looking at the option of playing in the NFL one day. That would be obviously a bucket list, a dream come true,’ Kane told Channel 5’s Kirsten Watson.
‘I think there’s still a long way to go between now and that moment. But I think it’s something that I’ve got one eye on.
‘And who knows, towards the end of my career, I might take it a little bit more seriously. See how I’d go about that. Yeah, who knows? You never know.’
Kane was introduced to the sport in his late teens after stumbling on a YouTube documentary about Brady during his all-conquering stint with the New England Patriots.
And while Brady, 43, continues to rewrite the record books after leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the playoffs for the first time since the 2007 season, Kane spoke about the pair’s relationship.
‘We got in touch through Instagram probably four or five years ago now. Obviously, I was already a big fan of his and the way he worked and the way he was,’ he said.
‘He loves soccer and I know his son loves soccer as well. We’ve got talking and I got the chance to go out and watch the Patriots beat the Rams in the Super Bowl and we caught up at the after party. That’s the first time I got to meet him in person.
‘Obviously, we don’t get a lot of time to see each other with the schedules that we both have. I think we just both appreciate each other in the sport and I guess we both have similarities in the way we are as people as well. I hope our relationship continues and whenever we do have time to catch up, I’m sure we will.’
While Kane has seen Brady lift one of his six Super Bowl titles in Atlanta, will the quarterback make the journey to England to see the striker in action?
‘Yeah, absolutely, for sure,’ Kane said. ‘Whenever he gets the time, he said he would be over to come and watch. The schedule is pretty packed at the moment. And obviously with everything that’s going on, we’re not sure when the fans are going to be back, but I’m sure he will get over and watch a game. And yeah, it’ll be great to see him in the new stadium.’
But after Brady swapped the white of New England for the red of Tampa, Kane will not be making the same transition.
And after the Patriots missed out on the postseason for the first time in 11 years, Kane pledged to stick by them through thick and thin.
‘I’ve stayed true, I’m a Patriots fan through and through, but for sure, obviously, Tom got into the Bucs so I keep one eye on them.’
‘The Patriots had a bit of a difficult year, a transition year. It’s not been easy, obviously, whenever you lose one of the best players ever.’
