A Captain Marvel Villain Referenced Supergirl’s Origin

WIth Captain Marvel stranded in a desolate future, she encounters Namor’s evil son, Ove, who makes a super reference to the DC Universe.

The Marvel Universe is like a liquid, ebbing, flowing, ever shape-shifting to accommodate its endless alternate timelines and futures. Carol Danvers, Captain Marvel, finds herself caught within one such future where Earth is a devastated wasteland. Only a scant number of heroes remain under the rule of the enigmatic Ove, a man who has invited Carol and her partners into his home. In Captain Marvel #24, Ove makes a strange comment that rings closely to another universe’s cosmic hero.

Shortly after being admitted into Ove’s compound within the remains of the New York Public Library Ove formally addresses Brigid, the daughter of Thor within this timeline. Ove makes the observation that Brigid looks to be Asgardian. Brigid confirms his statement by telling him that while she is Asgardian, she is only half. Ove finds humor in this by telling her that he, too, is half Asgardian. He continues to muse that if the two took enough time they might learn that they could be cousins. “Imagine that, finding a cousin at the end of the world,” Ove says, looking at Brigid.

This single statement is incredibly similar to the backstory of another hero from space, hailing from an entirely different universe. In DC comics, Superman is not an Earthling; instead, he is a Kryptonian, the sole survivor from his destroyed planet. Or so he thought until one day he discovers a young woman wearing his own insignia on her chest. Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman, survived the destruction of Krypton when Argo City, the place she was living, was ejected into space, protected by a large weather dome encasing the city. Argo City is itself eventually destroyed, but not before her father Zor-El, brother of Jor-El, Superman’s father, sent her to Earth in a rocket just as Superman had been sent. In Action Comics #252 by Otto Binder and Al Plastino, Superman learns of Supergirl for the first time.

Ove’s statement of finding a cousin at the end of the world is a parallel to Superman finding Supergirl after their own planet of Krypton had been destroyed. In the future that Carol finds herself, Earth is destroyed. For all intents and purposes, it is the end of the world. If in fact Ove and Brigid were to be cousins the coincidence between them and Superman and Supergirl would be very similar.

Of course, Ove and Brigid’s relationship is much less loving and heartfelt than Superman and Supergirl’s so this is where the similarities would end. Clark and Kara would work together to help repair the world; Ove is content simply living as a monarch on his throne of ash.
