West Ham player ratings vs Freiburg: Michail Antonio a menace as Mohammed Kudus steals the show

Cresswell #Cresswell

West Ham thrashed Freiburg 5-0 to progress to the quarter-finals of the Europa League, with Mohammed Kudus scoring two brilliant goals.

After losing 1-0 in Germany last week, the Hammers wasted no time in levelling the tie when Lucas Paqueta steered home at the far post after nine minutes.

Jarrod Bowen’s fierce low strike made it two before the interval and Aaron Cresswell effectively ended the tie as a contest with a well-taken third.

Kudus ran from inside his own half to make it 4-0 and then drilled home a strike from outside the box to cap another fine European night for the Hammers.

Here’s how we rated the West Ham players…

Lukasz Fabianski 7

Only had routine save to make, flapped at one high ball but solid enough.

Vladimir Coufal 7

Whipped in some dangerous crosses as the game opened up in the second half and came close to scoring. Had one or two hairy moments defensively.

Kostas Mavropanos 7

Solid at the back on the rare occasions when Freiburg threatened.

Kurt Zouma 7

The captain did well defensively, dominating Freiburg in the air.

Aaron Cresswell 8

Whipped in the corner for West Ham’s opener and took his goal superbly.

A lovely finish from Aaron Cresswell 🎯

Tomas Soucek 8

Made the opening goal with an excellent header across the face of the six-yard box. Always a threat from set pieces.

Edson Alvarez 7

Neat and tidy in the middle of the park, providing a platform for West Ham’s attackers.

Jarrod Bowen 8

Took his goal really well, displaying strength and skill. A live wire down the right flank.

Lucas Paqueta 7

Got the all-important first goal with a sharp finish at the far post. Plenty of nice touches but took a knock in the first half and hooked on the hour.

Mohammed Kudus 9

Scored a stunning individual goal, dribbling from deep inside his own half to make it 4-0, and a fine strike from outside the box. What a player.

Michail Antonio 8

A menace for Freiburg all evening without scoring. Put one on a plate for Kudus in the first half but the winger fired wide.

Substitutes

James Ward-Prowse (Paqueta 62′) 7

Sprayed some nice passes around the park.

Ben Johnson (Antonio 78′) 6

Did well as a left winger for the final 15 minutes.

Kalvin Phillips (Alvarez 86′) 6

A late cameo after the disappointment of missing out on an England place.

Danny Ings (Kudus 86′) 6

Not enough time to make a real impression.

George Earthy (Bowen 86′) 6

A big moment for the youngster who made his debut late on.

Not used: Areola, Knightbridge, Ogbonna, Aguerd, Casey, Mubama, Orford.
