Keidean Coleman injury confirmed in brutal update as Carlton win AFL thriller

Carlton #Carlton

Keidean Coleman has been dealt a cruel blow after it was confirmed he tore his ACL in the first round of the AFL as Carlton pulled off one of the great comebacks to defeat the home side. Carlton managed to reel off eight-straight goals to win (86) 12.13 (85) loss that ended a 14-game winning streak at the Gabba stronghold.

Unfortunately to compound Brisbane’s devastated loss, Coleman was helped from the field at halftime on Friday after a nasty incident. Coleman’s left leg clashed with Carlton tackler Lachie Fogarty as he took a kick.

Coleman was believed to have hyper-extended his knee in the ugly incident. However, in a sad update, coach Chris Fagan delivered the news of a likely season-ending injury speaking after the game.

“He’ll get a scan tomorrow but at this stage it looks like an ACL,” he said. “We haven’t had much luck with ACLs, think about (Eric) Hipwood, (Cam) Rayner, Ashy (Will Ashcroft) last year.

“That’s not confirmed, but it’s more than likely.” And in an unfortunate update, SEN reporter Sam Edmund confirmed Coleman has torn his ACL and will most likely miss the season. AFL fans were left devastated for Coleman who entered the season as one of the best players in the competition.

The Lions could see Conor McKenna return from a hamstring injury next week, but Will Ashcroft won’t feature until the later half of this season after his setback in 2023. Losing Coleman is a huge blow for one of the title contenders with his defence and swift ball use hard to replace.

This was evident in his performance in the first half of last season’s grand final. “We get disappointed for all the lads with those sorts of injuries, because we know the way back’s a long way back,” Fagan said. “It’ll create an opportunity for somebody else, which will be their good fortune.”

Despite Coleman’s horrible injury, Fagan wasn’t impressed with his team’s collapse as Carlton hit eight-straight goals to win the match. “We don’t walk away from what happened tonight,” he said.

“It wasn’t a terrible performance, it was just a really bad one quarter. We need to chat about it and address it. You need to sleep on it, need to watch the vision and get the absolute truth of what happened and understand that.”
