LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers were back on the court Tuesday night, kicking of a new season just 72 days after winning their 17th NBA title down in the bubble in Orlando.
Before the game they got their championship rings in an awesome ceremony that had a big surprise, as the players’ family members presented their rings with some pretty emotional videos shown on the Jumbotron. Markieff Morris’ young daughter, by the way, stole the show with her very loud introduction of her dad.
Once the rings were handed out, however, the team didn’t unveil their latest championship banner. Instead, the banner was covered with a black banner that simply said “Stay tuned, Lakers fans.”
The team announced shortly beforehand that they wouldn’t be unveiling the banner until fans are allowed inside Staples Center, which is pretty awesome. The fans never had a chance to celebrate this championship with their team, and vice versa, so it’s only fitting that they will wait to do it together whenever things become more safe in Los Angeles.
The Lakers are the first of the four major sports leagues starting a new season after crowing a champion during the pandemic. This is all new to all of us, including the leagues that are trying to find some normal during anything-but-normal times.
I think how the Lakers handled the banner unveiling was masterfully done and they should be applauded for thinking of their fans in this way and wanting to be there with them when it’s time to finally really be able to celebrate a championship.
It’s nuts that the Lakers, who ended up losing to the Clippers last night, are back to work and the NBA is back after such a short offseason but we’re off and running and the league is showing once again that it knows how to handle just about everything thrown its way.
Well done.
