K9 recovers drugs smuggled into Broome County Correctional Facility
Broome #Broome
DICKINSON (WBNG) — The Broome County Sheriff’s Office said it recovered smuggled drugs and contraband in the correctional facility on two separate occasions thanks to K9 Marley.
On Feb. 14, the K9 Marley and the Correctional Investigation Unit, or CIU, searched a female-occupied K-Dorm and found narcotics, which turned out to be heroin, in one of the bunks. The dorm belonged to Heather A. Aviles, 36, of Owego, the sheriff’s office said. She was in the facility following burglary and contempt charges.
For the drugs found in the dorm, Aviles was charged with promoting prison contraband in the first degree; a class D felony and criminal use of drug paraphernalia in the second degree, a misdemeanor.
Then, on Feb 23, K9 Marley and the CIO searched the male-occupied F-Pod housing unit. K9 Marley alerted investigators to the cell that housed Marvin R. Greene, age 34 of Binghamton, who was remanded to the facility one day prior on drug-related charges.
As investigators arrived, Greene began to flush his toilet multiple times, the sheriff’s office said. Investigators proceeded to conduct a cell search and strip search for the presence of contraband. The office said, that during the search, Greene became uncooperative, physically struggling with officers while attempting to conceal an item on his person.
The item was a green leafy substance inside a condom wrapped in black tape. The substance tested positive for synthetic cannabinoids.
He was charged with promoting prison contraband in the first degree and attempting to conceal/alter/destroy physical evidence, both charges are felonies. He was also charged with obstructing governmental administration in the second degree, a misdemeanor.
“Outstanding work by our Corrections Investigations Team and K9 Marley,” said Sheriff Fred Akshar in a news release. “We continue to see our targeted investments in the Correctional Facility paying off. Let these incidents serve as a clear message to anyone considering an attempt to compromise the health, safety and security of those working and living in the Broome County Correctional Facility: You will be found and held accountable for your crimes.”
