Arsenal player ratings vs Man City: Runarsson drops clanger, Mustafi struggles, Martinelli sparkles briefly

Mustafi #Mustafi

Arsenal’s miserable run of form continued as they were thumped by Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Here’s how  Mikel Arteta’s side rated at the Emirates Stadium…

Alex Runarsson 2

A nightmare game for the goalkeeper. Didn’t cover himself in glory for any of the City goals, but the second was a proper howler as he let Riyad Mahrez’s free-kick go straight through him. Shaky in possession, too.

Cedric Soares 5

Rarely gets a chance to play but actually didn’t do that bad. Got forward a few times and put in some decent crosses.

Gabriel 5

Not his best performance but was still the best of Arsenal’s defenders on a dismal night. Not that that is much to shout about.

Shkodran Mustafi 3

Really struggled against this Man City attack. Lost his man for the first goal and was nowhere to be seen for the fourth.

Sead Kolasinac 3

Another one who had an off-night in defence. Was close to leaving the club in the summer and will surely be off in January now?

Ainsley Maitland-Niles 6

Started at wing-back and finished in midfield. Did okay in both positions and offered some dynamism going forward.

Dani Ceballos 5

Struggled to get a hold of the game and spent most of the match working to try and get the ball off City’s midfield.

Mohamed Elneny 5

Another sub-par performance from the Egyptian, who was taken off after just over an hour. Booked for a bad tackle in first-half, too.

Joe Willock 6

Played out of position on the right of a front-three, but put in a decent shift. A few nice touches and work rate was better than most.

Gabriel Martinelli 7 | Star man

Only played just over 45 minutes as he had to come off with an injury, but looked good. Full of energy and setup Lacazette for his goal.

Alexandre Lacazette 6

Got a goal but still doesn’t look like his usual self. The hope will be that his goal gives him a much-needed confidence boost.

Substitutes

Nicolas Pepe (Martinelli 49’) 6

Brought on for Martinelli, but didn’t get into the game until late on. Went close with an effort from outside the box.

Emile Smith Rowe (Elneny 66’) 6

Looked bright and lively when he came on. Certainly didn’t do any harm to claims he should play more.

Folarin Balogun (Lacazette 76’) 5

Came on when the game was dead and had little time to make any real impact.

Unused: Leno, Tierney, Mari, Nketiah.
