The Dallas Stars acquired defenseman Chris Tanev from the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night, the latest addition by a Stanley Cup contender in the Western Conference ahead of the March 8 NHL trade deadline.

Tanev, 34, gives the Stars some much-needed depth not only on the penalty kill but defensively 5-on-5 to try to get through the gauntlet that is the playoffs in the West.

2. Trade details

Dallas sent a 2024 second-round pick, 20-year-old defense prospect Artem Grushnikov and a 2026 conditional third-rounder to Calgary for Tanev, who was considered one of the top trade candidates available.

The Flames are retaining half and New Jersey another quarter of Tanev’s $4.5 million salary as part of the deal, which also includes the Stars flipping a ‘26 fourth-round pick to the Devils for unsigned goaltending prospect Cole Brady.

3. NHL career

Tanev spent a decade with the Vancouver Canucks before heading to Calgary. With Vancouver, he amassed over 500 games played, scoring 22 goals and 96 assists.

As a free agent, he signed 4-year, $18 million contract with the Flames in 2020.

Tanev is in the final season of that deal, and he’s averaging nearly 20 minutes of ice time this season and has a goal and 13 assists in 56 games.

4. Green means go?

Tanev has played in 121 regular season games in the past two season. He has scored two goals.

Both of those goals came against Dallas.

The Stars will hope that fun fact continues in games involving Victory Green now that Tanev will don the colors himself.

5. A hockey family

Tanev has two younger brothers. The middle child, Brandon, is a left-winger for the Seattle Kraken. His youngest brother, Kyle, has played in the Ontario Junior Hockey League and the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.

In a radio interview, Brandon commented on the siblings’ rivalry.

“It’s how we are with everything in life. We compete to beat each other, whether at the gym or at the golf course,” he said.

Chris and Brandon will next face each other when Dallas heads to Seattle on on March 30.
