Liverpool are set to make another attempt to bring Michael Edwards back to the club.
Edwards is regarded as one of the best operators in football after leading Liverpool’s return to the top of European football under Jurgen Klopp, with the 44-year-old credited with the Reds’ recruitment during a successful era at Anfield.
He stepped down from his role of sporting director in 2022, a position he had occupied since 2016. Reports last month suggested Edwards had rejected a chance to return to Liverpool, though Fabrizio Romano is reporting that the Merseysiders will make another attempt to persuade him back to the club.
Jurgen Klopp will leave Liverpool at the end of the season and the club’s ownership, FSG, are keen to ensure a smooth transition. Edwards has been identified as the man to help lead the new era, given his background at the club.
FSG want Edwards to take over football operations and put a new structure in place, including the appointment of a new sporting director. However, there has been no indication that Edwards is willing to return at this stage.
Since leaving Liverpool, Edwards has set up his own business alongside former Liverpool colleague Ian Graham, providing analytics for multiple clubs.
