Superstar Mr Brightside cemented his reputation as a champion of the turf, according to his jockey Craig Williams when he again proved too classy for his rivals to win the Group 1 Futurity Stakes.
He also firmed into $2.50 favourite with Sportsbet to make it back-to-back All-Star Mile wins when he runs at Caulfield on March 16
“He’s an amazing thoroughbred and we can call him a champion now without using that word too loosely, he’s well performed and just gets the job done all the time at the top level,” said Williams who has now won 10 races on him.
Mr Brightside’s co-trainer Will Hayes said he was so thankful to be training a galloper with such talent.
“It’s so humbling every time we’re the ones that get to put a saddle on him because when he can just go out and run those sorts of races, you’re gobsmacked every time,” Hayes said.
Hayes said that after two pretty hard races this time in, it was about getting him ready for the All-Star Mile at Caulfield on March 16.
“They were two pretty hard races, so he’ll be going back to the water walker and the day paddocks back at Lindsay Park and keeping his head down for some well-earned grass.”
Hayes paid tribute to Celine Gaudray and her daring tactics on the veteran Buffalo River, who set a fast pace in front and held on for third.
“Kudos to Celine Gaudray and Buffalo River, those were great tactics, they really made everyone think in the race,” he said. “I’d like to hear what Craig was thinking at that time, but for him to just be able to absorb such high mid-race pressure, kick off and then run a strong final 200 is just champion qualities. It’s awesome.”
It was Mr Brightside’s 16th win and his sixth at Group 1 level.
Mr Brightside ($1.50 fav) defeated Pericles ($9.50) by a length and a half with Buffalo River ($11) a length and a quarter away third.
