What’s open and closed in Hamilton this Family Day

Family Day #FamilyDay

Monday, Feb. 19, is the provincial holiday Family Day, which means some businesses and services will be closed or operating on special schedules. 

Schools, banks and provincial government services will be closed, along with the LCBO and The Beer Store. However, federal offices including Canada Post and passport offices will be open. 

Here are some of the changes you can expect in Hamilton.

Waste collection

There will be no garbage, recycling or green bin pickup on Monday. Community Recycling Centres will be closed. Waste collection will take place Tuesday. 

Transit

On Monday, buses will operate on a Sunday schedule with the last Sunday-schedule trips leaving downtown around 10 p.m.

The accessible transit customer service office will be closed Monday.

The DARTS accessible transit service will be operating on a holiday schedule. Anyone looking to travel that day must make a reservation in advance. All subscription trips are cancelled, except for dialysis trips.

Libraries

All Hamilton Public Library branches will be closed Monday and bookmobile service will be unavailable. Central Library is open for warming on the first floor between 1 and 5 p.m. Monday. 

Recreation

City recreation centres will be closed Monday, except for:

  • Bennetto Recreation Centre
  • Bernie Morelli Recreation Centre
  • Dundas Lions Memorial Recreation Centre
  • Stoney Creek Recreation Centre
  • Valley Park Recreation Centre
  • Westmount Recreation Centre
  • Sackville Hill Seniors Centre
  • Those facilities will have special programming. 

    City arenas will be closed Monday, except at the following which will be open between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. for public skating:

  • Beverly Arena
  • Chedoke Arena
  • Coronation Arena
  • Glanbrook Arena
  • Harry Howell Arena
  • JL Grightmire Arena
  • Morgan Firestone Arena
  • Rosedale Arena
  • Pat Quinn Arena
  • Saltfleet Arena
  • Stoney Creek Arena
  • Valley Park Arena
  • Outdoor rinks (Weather dependent)
  • Museums

    Hamilton civic museums will be open for Family Day programming and the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum will be open Monday.

    The Westmount, Valley park and Norman Pinky Lewis recreation centres will have reduced warming hours and be open between 5:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. 

    Hamilton Farmers’ Market

    The farmers’ market downtown will be open Saturday but closed Sunday through Tuesday. 

    Public Health

    Hamilton public health’s vaccine booking line will be closed for the long weekend, as will its vaccine records line. Mobile vaccine clinics will be closed Monday.  

    Animal services

    The city’s animal services counter and shelter will be closed. Call 905-574-3433 for animal-related emergencies. 

    City offices

    All city of Hamilton administrative offices will be closed Monday, including the housing services office and the Hamilton Street Railway customer service centre. 

    The licensing and bylaw phone line will close Friday at 4:30 p.m. and re-open Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. 

    Municipal service centres will be closed Monday.
