I find myself, once again, outside the office of Peter Bone, disgraced former MP for Wellingborough. Since I was last in North Northamptonshire three weeks ago, it seems that everyone who has ever set foot in a newsroom has made the same pilgrimage.

Like me, they noted the broken down car outside, the litter on the street, and the papered-up windows. Like me, they failed to track down the candidate to replace Bone in Thursday’s by-election: his partner, Helen Harrison.
