Adele’s birthday Instagram post prompts conversation about weight, beauty standards

Low-key, British singer Adele made a rare appearance on social media Tuesday that was intended to share thanks to her fans for birthday wishes and the frontline workers for protecting the world against COVID-19. The chatter about her weight loss and physical transformation overshadowed her post’s intent.
The Grammy Award-winning vocalist turned 32 Tuesday, so her post was meant to acknowledge the “birthday love” she had received. In the Tuesday night Instagram post, Adele is seen in a form-fitting black mini-dress, smiling big and gesturing with her hands. Her lean frame drastically contrasts to the singer’s look over the years.
“I hope you’re all staying safe and sane during this crazy time,” she captioned the photo. “I’d like to thank all of our first responders and essential workers who are keeping us safe while risking their lives! You are truly our angels.”
During the last year, the “Hello” artist has reportedly adopted the Sirtfood diet, which encompasses drinking green juices, calorie restriction and increased protein, according to Healthline.
With the evidence of her new healthy lifestyle showing on her waistline, several folks responded with congratulatory messages. In the thread of comments under the post, fans and colleagues responded with sentiments including “you look amazing” and “your waist is snatched.”
Spanish television personality Nagore Robles complimented Adele’s hard work in improving her health, but she also noted that the singer’s beauty was unmistakable before changing her figure.
“You’ve worked so hard to look like this and I’m so glad you’ve got your purpose, but I want to tell you that for me you were always spectacular, beautiful and sexy woman ♥️,” she posted on Instagram.
The straightforward Instagram post has garnered a debate and mixed perspectives on the praise for Adele’s new look. Some have applauded her for changing her lifestyle and getting results. Others see the praise for her appearance as affirmation that beauty standards are mistakenly centered on being svelte.
Some who supported the singer’s transformation said they didn’t see why her weight loss sparked debate.
Adele has not responded to the debate Tuesday, but she previously talked about focusing on herself and being committed to changing after her breakup from husband Simon Konecki in April 2019. They share 7-year-old son Angelo.
Some Twitter users took some guesses on how Adele might feel about the beauty and weight loss conversation.
