“The Takeover” is back in Las Vegas. Teofimo Lopez Jr. makes his return to the ring on Thursday night when he takes on Jamaine Ortiz in a special showcase event. Lopez Jr. will look to make the first defense of his WBO junior welterweight title, which he won with a masterful performance against Josh Taylor last June. It was his best showing since he outdueled Vasiliy Lomachenko to claim the unified lightweight titles in 2020.
Ortiz is familiar with Lomachenko’s game. Ortiz suffered a decision loss to the native of Ukraine in 2022, but is otherwise unbeaten as a pro. Lopez and Ortiz have some history in the ring as the two squared off in the finals of the 2015 Golden Gloves competition as amateurs with Lopez walking away victorious. The fight also marks Ortiz’s debut at 140 pounds after spending his first 19 bouts at 135 pounds.
