Sony giving refunds to players who bought ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ in its PlayStation online store

Troubles for the much-anticipated video game “Cyberpunk 2077” continue.

Earlier this week, the developers of the much-hyped futuristic game apologized for bugs and crashes plaguing players on the Sony PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Xbox One console game systems. The game is also playable on PCs.

Now, Sony’s PlayStation store is offering refunds to those who bought the game, which costs about $60, via digital download.

Sony Interactive Entertainment, the company said in a statement sent to USA TODAY, “strives to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction. Following discussions with CD Projekt S.A., the publisher and developer of Cyberpunk 2077, SIE will begin to offer a full refund for all gamers who purchased Cyberpunk 2077 via PlayStation Store and want a refund at this time.”

Those who bought the game can go to the PlayStation web site at www.playstation.com/cyberpunk-2077-refunds/ to get the refund.

The game had also been removed from the PlayStation store “until further notice,” it said, in a statement also posted on Twitter.

Publisher CD Project Red did not immediately return a request for comment.

But Sony’s move raises questions about other versions of the game. Mat Piscatella, executive director of games for research firm The NPD Group, on Twitter described Sony’s action as “significant, to say the least. … now the big question is what happens with all that physical product at retail and with consumers.”

When asked on Twitter, whether anything like this had happened with a major video game release, Piscatella said, “At anywhere near this scale? Nope.”
