Manchester United manager Erik Ten hag confirmed that Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana returns to the Old Trafford by Thursday this week.
The 27-year-old goalkeeper represented Cameroon at the 2024 African Cup of Nations held in Ivory Coast. However, it’s a been far from a positive experience for the goalkeeper. Cameroon manager Rigobert Song dropped Onana for three of the four games at the tournament. The game where he played against Senegal, they fell for a disappointing defeat of 3-1.
Issues with Cameroonian FA President, Samuel Eto’o and manager Rigobert Song might have led to the exclusion of Onana from the starting eleven. Onana’s place was replaced by Fabrice Ondoa – Onana’s cousin and is a goalkeeper for Nimes Olympique, a third-division French side.
The Cameroonian goalkeeper decided to play a crucial match against Tottenham Hotspur. This decision of arriving late in the AFCON led to his arrival at Ivory Coast in the morning of Cameroon’s opening game against Gambia.
The decision made by the 27-year-old became the reason for huge criticism by the experts and fans at the tournament.
Andre Onana opted to stay as long as possible in Manchester to avoid any important game, but also concerned about his replacement in Man United -Altay Bayindir may flourish in his absence.
Bayindir made his debut for United yesterday, following his move from Fenerbahce in summer. The Turkish international produced a pragmatic, although quite shaky, performance against Newport County. Although, a few frightening moments were strengthened by a number of good saves and claims from crosses.
Even though United conceded two goals to the League Two side, neither were Bayindir’s fault.
Ten Hag praised his number two goalkeeper’s “composed” performance at the post match interview. “I think it was a composed debut” – Erik Ten Hag at Rodney Parade. “Some good saves, so very composed. I think, overall, he can be happy” – said furtherly by the Man united coach.
The Dutchman confirmed that Onana “will be back for Thursday”.
United now set to resume their Premier League campaign with a trip to the Molineux Stadium to play against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Thursday. But whether Ten Hag was indicating Onana’s return in the game or simply back in training is another story.
The Dutch manager revealed that, “Maybe, for the first time as long as I was manager, I can pick a team from the squad that is probably the strongest here,” indicating the former.
