MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – A layer of low clouds remains intact across Central Alabama as of the mid-morning hours. There is dry air filtering in from the northwest as high pressure pushes closer, though.

This is evident when looking at visible satellite imagery, which depicts the clouds breaking apart nicely to the north and west of the region. This trend will continue, which should allow for increasing sunshine beginning around lunchtime.

Even with clouds breaking this afternoon, highs will be chilly in the middle to upper 40s.. These numbers are well below average for mid-December as average highs normally climb into the upper 50s!

Tonight will be the coldest night on our 7-day forecast. When you combine dry air, high pressure overhead, clear skies, and calm wind you get the perfect recipe for a very cold night. Look for lows in the middle to upper 20s.

Plan on dealing with frost on the car as you head out the door Friday morning!

After a sunny Friday and partly cloudy Saturday, clouds build for the second half of the weekend as another weak system slides across the Deep South.

A chance of showers exists Saturday night through late Sunday night, with the best chance coming during the day Sunday. Exact details are still a bit muddled on when the highest shower chances will be.

What we can say is not everyone will see rain, it won’t rain during that entire window and heavy rain is not expected. It’s just difficult to pinpoint the time when the best chance of rain will exist right now, so if you have outdoor plans make sure you keep your First Alert weather app handy!

Monday afternoon through Wednesday evening now appears to be entirely dry with a healthy amount of sun a good bet ahead of another cold front is poised to push through Wednesday night into Christmas Eve.

That will likely bring a chance of showers to the entire region, but a washout doesn’t appear likely for Christmas Eve.

Following that cold front, models are in great agreement on a very cold shot of air for Christmas Day and the following weekend.

Temperatures will likely fall into the 20s Christmas morning and only rebound into the upper 30s and lower 40s during the afternoon despite plenty of sun.
