Comedians Playing Among Us for Charity Tonight!

Paul Scheer

Comics, like the rest of us, have been searching for new ways to entertain themselves during the pandemic and have been experimenting with a variety of online show formats from Zoom to YouTube to Instagram. Also, some of the cooler kids have been playing video games and hanging out on their Twitch channels.

Paul Scheer of How Did This Get Made? and The League recently decided to do both of the last two things at the same for charity and invite a bunch of his comedian friends like Nick Kroll and Jason Mantzoukas along with him! They’ll be playing the multiplayer game Among Us (made famous recently by AOC) for charity on a live show tonight at 8:30pm ET/530PT that you can stream for free and any donations will go directly to Feeding America.

In conversation, Paul told me that he had been playing Among Us with a group of friends on Wednesday nights, and fans on his Twitch channel on Thursdays nights were telling him that he had to get his friends to play Among Us on Twitch. Being no stranger to charities, like When We All Vote, and the L.A. Children’s Hospital, he started thinking about how food banks across the country are being pushed to capacity during the holidays and he realized that he could have a good time getting his friends to play and helping out a good cause as well. “It’s like a win win win for everybody,” he told me.

The pandemic has been terrible for so many reasons, but it might actually be making comedy better because, in the absence of in-person shows, comedians are now able to do shows all across the country from their living rooms and that’s made for a fun relaxed atmosphere for all the performers.

Paul says he loves being able to put his kids to bed and do improv shows and talk shows and has never been more relaxed. He knows that the big theaters and shows are eventually going to come back, but during this time comedians have to adapt and fill the void for people at home looking for things to do. He tells me that theaters are adapting as well and he’s been doing original shows without an audience at the Largo Theater in Los Angeles and he’s happy that a portion of the money has been going to charity.

If you sign on tonight to watch Paul Scheer and company play Among Us on Twitch it will resemble a Zoom screen on speaker view where you’ll see the game being played and whoever is talking at the time will appear on the screen as well. He’s been doing shows with Rob Cordry on Twitch that he calls “R-Rated talk shows” and he looks forward to making it more comedy performance-based instead of just gaming and he says it makes him feel like he’s back at UCB in the early days creating their own shows with robot suits and strobe lights.

He says that the comedians tonight are serious gamers and he won’t be holding back from winning and trash-talking and making it as entertaining as possible with raffles and prizes throughout the night. Head on over to Paul’s Twitch channel tonight to catch all the action!

And if you can’t get enough Paul Scheer, he’ll back live Friday night with another virtual How Did This Get Made? live show. Tickets available now.
