Oscars fans fume as Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig snubbed in 2024 nominations

Despite the speculation and hope for an Oscar nomination for Barbie fans, both Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig didn’t make the cut in this year’s list. The 2024 nominations were released on January 23 with a diverse line-up, but some fans have been left utterly devastated.

Greta Gerwig has been overlooked for her directorial role in ‘Barbie’, which was hailed by critics for saving cinema last year and earned nearly $1.4bn (£1.12bn) at the global box office. Meanwhile, Margot also failed to make the shortlist for Best Actress.

However, Ryan Gosling made the shortlist for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Ken. The movie Barbie also made it onto the list for Best Picture and was twice nominated for Best Original Song.

Fans have taken to social media to slam the Oscar nominations, saying that both Margot and Greta should have gotten the recognition they deserved.

One person posted on X: “The Greta Lee snub, the Margot Robbie snub, the Charles Melton snub, the Julianne Moore and NATALIE PORTMAN snub #Oscars2024.”

A second said: “Greta gerwig is not nominated for best director????? #Oscars2024,” as a third typed: “no because wdym they nominated ryan for barbie and NOT margot…#Oscars2024.” (sic)

A fourth commented: “The Margot Robbie snub?????? #Oscars2024” as a fifth also penned: “Wait Ryan Gosling got nominated for his role as Ken, but Margot Robbie didn’t get nominated for Barbie?! And Greta got snubbed for Best Director?!?!”

A sixth wrote: “Greta Gerwig made a film that was critically acclaimed, culturally impactful, hilarious, unique, visually exceptional, perfectly cast and acted, left people laughing, crying and thinking AND made a billion dollars at the box office. But no Best Director nom?! #Barbie.”

Other major snubs include Leonardo DiCaprio for his role in Killers of the Flower Moon. Barry Keoghan also wasn’t recognised for his performance in Saltburn and Greta Lee also didn’t get nominated for Best Actress.

Meanwhile, Emily Blunt and Cillian Murphy have both been recognised for their roles in Oppenheimer. Emily is in contention for Best Supporting Actress and Cillian received a nod for Best Actor.

In a surprise announcement, America Ferrera was nominated for her role in Barbie in the category of Best Supporting Actress. The 39-year-old delivered a powerful monologue that resonated emotionally with viewers, which has clearly been recognised by Academy Award critics.

Oppenheimer led the awards this year with a whopping 13 nominations. The Academy Awards will take place on March 10 and will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
