Kadary Richmond notches triple-double, but Seton Hall sees 5-game winning streak snapped with triple-OT loss to No. 18 Creighton

Seton Hall entered Saturday’s matinee with No. 18 Creighton knowing that a win would likely propel them into the AP Top 25 on Monday.

But despite a triple-double from Kadary Richmond in front of a sold-out crowd, they could not stop 7-foot-1 Ryan Kalkbrenner and an onslaught of 3-pointers by the Bluejays and saw their five-game winning streak come to an end, 97-94 in triple-overtime, at Prudential Center. It was just the second triple-OT game in program history and the first since a win at Columbia on Feb. 1, 1983.

“I feel like we fought to the end regardless of the ups and downs of how the game was going,” said Dre Davis, who tallied 21 points and 9 rebounds before fouling out. “We gave it all we had, we just came up short.”

The Pirates (13-6, 6-2 Big East) fell half a game behind No. 1 UConn in the Big East standings pending the Huskies’ game at Villanova Saturday night and have now lost seven of their last nine to Creighton (14-5, 5-3).

Richmond, who was honored pre-game for scoring his 1,000th career point, notched the first triple-double in program history since Eddie Griffin in 2000-01 (and second ever) with 21 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds.

“It’s nothing new for us, he played well for us,” Davis said of Richmond.

Al-Amir Dawes, coming off scoring 21 in Tuesday’s win over St. John’s, tallied all 21 of his points after the intermission. Jaden Bediako was brilliant with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks, including several of Kalkbrenner.

In the third overtime, The Hall used a 5-0 run capped by a 3-pointer from Dawes to go ahead 88-83, but a basket by Trey Alexander put the Bluejays up 90-89 with 49.4 seconds left.

Richmond made two free throws to put The Hall up 91-90, but Alexander drained a 3 to make it 93-91.

Dawes missed a floater in the paint that would’ve tied it and Dylan Addae-Wusu was called for a foul on Steven Ashworth. He made both to push it to 95-91.

A 3-pointer by Isaiah Coleman made it 97-94 at the buzzer.

In the second extra period, Mason Miller drained a 3-pointer to put the Bluejays up 82-79, and Steven Ashworth hit 1-of-2 to extend it to 83-79.

Dawes was fouled shooting a 3 and made all three free throws to cut it to 83-82 with 13.4 seconds left.

Richmond then made a steal in the backcourt and fed it to Dawes for what appeared to be a go-ahead layup, but it was waved off and Creighton was called for a foul on Richmond. He hit two foul shots for an 84-83 lead.

“I was pretty excited,” Dawes said of the apparent go-ahead layup. “I didn’t really see if there was a foul so I jut laid it up and I thought we could’ve ended it right there..”

Richmond then had a chance to win the game at the stripe with the game tied at 83, but missed his second foul shot and Creighton failed to score on the other end.

Creighton’s Kalkbrenner was dominant in the paint with 28 points, 9 rebounds and 7 blocks, Alexander added 23 points and 8 rebounds and Baylor Scheierman scored 20 points. Creighton drained 13-of-36 from beyond the arc after making just 3-of-12 at the break.

With 29.2 seconds left in regulation, Richmond scored in the paint to make it 67-65 after twice being blocked by Trey Alexander (16 points, 7 rebounds), but Steven Ashworth answered with a layup to tie it at 67 with 3.3 seconds left.

Richmond then missed an off-balance potential game-winner a the end of regulation.

The Hall used a 17-4 run out of the half to go ahead 48-39 on a jumper by Dawes but Creighton proceeded to rattle off a 21-6 spurt — keyed by six 3′s and a Kalkbrenner dunk — to take lead at 60-54 lead.

Creighton took a 35-31 halftime lead powered by Kalkbrenner’s 14 points and Scheierman’s 10.

Davis had the hot hand for the Pirates with 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting in the first half. Bediako scored 9 and Richmond 8.

ESPN’s Joe Lunardi had Seton Hall as a 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament entering the day, with Creighton as a 4.

The Hall next hosts Providence on Wednesday.

“We got another crazy game coming up, we got an off day tomorrow so a lot of self-reflecting,” Dawes said, “so we just gotta come in Monday and Tuesday and get ready for Providence.”
