In the shadow of a recycling plant on the outskirts of Dunkirk, a string of shopping trolleys stick out of a frozen muddy bog littered with empty cans of kidney beans and plastic bags.
Khan Salar, 32, who ran a cricket club in a town just outside of Kabul, skipped along the makeshift bridge by his tent, exclaiming: “This side is my world and I am crossing over to heaven.”
The migrant, who said he fled persecution from the Taliban in 2021, feels much the same about crossing the English Channel to seek asylum in the UK, a place he feels he will finally be free to live his life according to his liberal values.
