Cam Green stoked to return to Australian Test team as No.4 batter

Cam Green expected to be named as David Warner’s replacement at the top of the Australian batting order.

But with the shock move of Steve Smith to open the batting, Green says he’s pleased to return to the team as a No.4.

Green has big shoes to fill against the West Indies, taking over that slot from one of Australia’s greatest-ever batters Steve Smith, who makes the move to opening with Usman Khawaja.

However, the West Australian says he’s “excited” to take up his “natural” role, and the position where he averages 46.77 with nine centuries for WA.

“I had no idea (that I would bat No.4) until about Wednesday,’’ he said. “(I was) excited when I heard the news.

“I thought it was about a 95 per cent chance of opening, so that’s where my head went for a couple of weeks.

“I’ve always felt maybe a touch rushed at six, especially after Heady (Travis Head) makes it look a bit too easy at No.5.

“I’ve always felt like I’ve maybe had to push the game along, whereas I feel like No.4 is my natural game where I can take my time and settle in.”

Speculation surrounding Warner’s replacement has been rife throughout the summer, with plenty of names thrown into the pot, including Green’s, before a call was finally made last week.

Fellow West Australian Cam Bancroft was left understandably devastated by his omission from the squad, having been the leading red-ball domestic player in the country across the last two years.

Marcus Harris also missed out after two summers of riding the pine while Matthew Renshaw was named in the squad as a backup.

Green had become the late favourite to earn back the spot he lost to state teammate Mitch Marsh during the Ashes as Australia’s selectors showed an urge to pick the team based on the best six batters in the country rather than as specialists.

The 24-year-old said having so many good players forced to miss out was tough but a good sign for cricket in Australia.

“I don’t feel any pressure,” he said. “Replacing someone like Steve is pretty tough, but I’m just going to play my own way. But I’m grateful for him putting (me batting at No.4) in his mind.

“I feel like there are a lot of seriously good, talented cricketers that are unfortunately missing out.

“I think that’s the beauty of where Australian cricket is at the moment. Renners (Matt Renshaw), Harry (Marcus Harris) and Bangers (Cameron Bancroft) are playing some awesome cricket.

“But then you’re also missing out on four or five other cricketers that could make the team as well. Good competition, that’s what makes a good team. (But) no extra pressure.

“I don’t feel it from within the group. So yeah, just go out and play my natural game.”
