After Cowboys implode, Bill Belichick to Dallas ‘has to happen’ | What they’re saying

Cowboys #Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys have emerged as a major suitor for Bill Belichick and his coaching services. Are there any reports that the Cowboys are looking to interview him? No. Is their head coach position even open as of the time of writing? Also no.

But as of Monday morning, the rumor mill is buzzing with speculation that Cowboys chairman Jerry Jones could (and should) fire head coach Mike McCarthy and go all-in on trying to bring in the recently departed head coach of the New England Patriots.

That’s how badly things went for Dallas over the weekend as they imploded against the Green Bay Packers on Saturday.

The Cowboys had just capped off a strong 12-5 season that saw them win the NFC East and finish with the No. 2 seed in the NFC. The team then proceeded to get boat-raced by the Packers, 48-32. That score made the game seem closer than it actually way. Green Bay led 48-16 in the fourth quarter before Dallas closed the gap in garbage time.

So, who’s calling for the Cowboys to call Belichick? Here’s a roundup of some of the biggest voices Monday morning:

Tim Calishaw, Dallas Morning News

“I would have put last week’s speculation that Jerry Jones should go out and get 71-year-old Bill Belichick to replace Mike McCarthy as No. 2 on the crazy list. And now? It should happen. It has to happen.”

Pat McAfee, broadcaster and former NFL punter

“Holy (expletive)… Bill Belichick is gonna be the head coach of the Cowboys isn’t he?”

Jordan Schultz, Bleacher Report

“One rival executive told me this week that if the Cowboys lost to the Packers, he thought Jerry Jones would go after Bill Belichick to replace Mike McCarthy.

Steve Politi, NJ.com

“Jones has to pick up the phone and make a single phone call. He has to convince Bill Belichick to come to Dallas the same way he lured his mentor, Bill Parcells, two decades ago to give his team some much needed credibility on the sideline.”

Devin McCourty, NBC analyst and former Patriots player, via WEEI’s Mike Kadlick

“If Bill Belichick is the guy that comes in there, this team will never show up for a playoff game like that. That’s one thing I promise you. …If they have the opportunity to get Coach Belichick in there, you don’t turn that down.”

Matt Vautour, MassLive

“Jones said “he hasn’t thought about it” when asked after the game on Sunday. But the Belichick speculation isn’t idle. Jones has been thinking about him for almost 30 years.”

Albert Breer, Sports Illustrated

“Bill Belichick has, quietly in recent years, through doing football business and attending owners meetings, built a very solid relationship with both Jerry and Stephen Jones. Things might be getting pretty interesting here.”

Ben Volin, Boston Globe

“The Cowboys also come ready-made for Belichick, assuming they stick with quarterback Dak Prescott. With a roster loaded with veterans and superstars, there may not be many better opportunities for Belichick to collect 14 wins to catch Don Shula and win a Super Bowl without Tom Brady or the Krafts.”

Peter King, NBC Sports

“I can’t believe Jerry Jones, with a star (fading though he is) like Bill Belichick on the free market, wouldn’t go hard after him to try to salvage this era of Cowboys history.”
