What’s being said nationally after Lions make history in wild-card round

DETROIT — The Detroit Lions erased some generational demons, notching their first postseason win since 1991-92, beating the Los Angeles Rams 24-23 in the wild-card round.

Detroit jumped out to an early advantage. But the Matthew Stafford-Puka Nacua connection kept the Rams within striking distance as the Lions hit a second-half offensive lull.

The Lions and their defense held when it mattered most, forcing a punt with 4:15 left with a one-point lead. And the Rams never touched the ball again, with Jared Goff and Amon-Ra St. Brown putting the game away with an 11-yard pass on second-and-9 before going into the victory formation.

Ford Field did its part in the wild-card round, with the Rams burning two of their timeouts in the second half to avoid delay of game penalties. When Sean McVay decided to punt away his final chance with the ball, the Rams were facing a tight window with only one timeout.

So, after going 30 years without hosting a playoff game. The Lions will host two in back-to-back weeks, with the winner of the Philadelphia Eagles-Tampa Bay Buccaneers set to come to Detroit for divisional action next week.
