Violence broke out between Proud Boys and antifa following two pro-Trump rallies in Washington, resulting in at least four stabbings and 23 arrests.
Two demonstrations were planned Saturday by Trump supporters to protest his loss in the 2020 presidential election, according to Fox News. President-elect Joe Biden won the election by more than 7 million votes, but President Trump and his supporters have been engaged in a number of legal battles in an attempt to overturn the election, making false claims of widespread, coordinated voter fraud.
Former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn, who was recently pardoned by the president regarding charges related to the Russia investigation, and Infowars host Alex Jones spoke at the event, according to NBC News.
White House deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino tweeted a picture of the protests from Marine One, the designation given to a military helicopter when the president is aboard, as the helicopter flew over the protests on its way to the Army-Navy football game.
Antifa and Black Lives Matter supporters organized counterprotests in response. The two sides remained largely peaceful during the day, but after nightfall, clashes erupted into violence that led to nine individuals being taken to the hospital, including two police officers, according to ABC News.
After the violence broke out, officers arrested 23 people out on a number of charges, according to Fox 5. Six individuals were arrested on charges of assaulting police, 10 were arrested for simple assault, and four for riotous acts. One person was charged with unlawful possession of a prohibited weapon, a stun gun.
The police told NBC News it was unclear which side started the confrontations.
