Tyrone Mings has hit out at Aston Villa supporters over their relentless abuse of teammate Anwar El Ghazi, after the midfielder became the hero on Saturday afternoon by converting a last-minute penalty to defeat Wolverhampton Wanderers.

El Ghazi has been a lightning rod for criticism from fans in the past, causing the 25-year-old to suspend his social media accounts in order to avoid the comments and hateful messages.

And Mings took to Twitter on Sunday morning to blast any supporters who were suddenly heaping praise on El Ghazi, especially those who had sent him abuse in the past, encouraging their ‘apology to be as loud as the disrespect.’

“Good morning villains,” Mings wrote.

“I really hope all you who were berating and hounding El Ghazi enough to make him suspend his social media, are in his DM’s today, apologising. A team game utilises a WHOLE squad and we need everyone… may your apology be as loud as the disrespect.”

His sentiments were echoed among teammates and the club, with defender Ezri Konza retweeting his post, and the official Aston Villa account quoting it with the response, ‘This.’

The winger has been used sparingly this season, only making four appearances off the bench, although he featured heavily in all three of Villa’s League Cup matches, before losing to Stoke City in the fourth round.

But El Ghazi was the man of the hour against Wolves on Saturday, stepping off the bench and stepping up to take the decisive penalty deep in injury time. The midfielder cooly converted the spot-kick, handing Villa a 1-0 win over their Midlands rivals and propelling them back into the top half of the table.

It was a crucial victory for the Villans, who bounced back from two straight defeats to kickstart their season going into the busy winter schedule.
