First Alert Weather: Morning fog and near-average temperatures Wednesday afternoon

Good Wednesday #GoodWednesday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Good morning and happy Wednesday!

It’s a chilly start to the day with temperatures in the 30s. Areas west of Interstate 65 are slightly cooler in the lower 30s. I want to give everyone a first alert for the potential to see patchy fog this morning. We are seeing visibility reduced to a half mile or less in parts of east Alabama this morning. Any fog that develops should dissipate by 8 to 9 a.m.

First Alert AccuTrack Satellite and Radar is showing us dry with a partly cloudy sky. I think we’ll see some sunshine today, but we will likely see additional clouds roll into our area by this evening and tonight as another cold front pushes into the Southeast.

High Temperatures Today(WBRC)

We are looking for a partly cloudy to mostly cloudy sky this afternoon with high temperatures in the mid-to-upper 50s. Our average high for Dec. 27 is 55, so we will likely end up close to average for this time of the year. Winds are forecast to come from the southwest today at 5 to 10 mph. If you have any evening plans, you’ll want to grab the jacket. Temperatures will likely cool into the mid to upper 40s by 7 to 8 p.m. There’s a very small chance we could see a few sprinkles in parts of Marion, Winston, and Cullman counties this evening between 6 and 10 p.m. I think most of us will end up dry.

Colder Temperatures Thursday: You’ll want to hold on to a warm coat and grab a sweater tomorrow. A strong cold front will move through central Alabama tonight into tomorrow morning. It will bring us another round of chilly temperatures as we finish out the year.

Holiday Returns Forecast(WBRC)

We will likely start tomorrow dry and cold with temperatures in the low to mid 30s. Tomorrow afternoon will likely end up partly cloudy with cloud cover increasing late in the day. Temperatures should end up 5 to 10 degrees below average with highs in the mid-to-upper 40s. Winds will come from the west tomorrow at 5 to 10 mph with gusts up to 15 mph.

Friday is a First Alert Weather Day: We have declared Friday, December 29, 2023 a First Alert Weather Day for the chance to see light rain mixed in with flurries and snow showers. The impact for this event appears low, but we want you to have the First Alert knowledge on the situation in case you plan on traveling north Friday evening.

Next Big Thing – Fri. 12/29(WBRC)

We will likely see a partly to mostly cloudy sky Friday. Morning temperatures could start out near freezing. Friday will likely end up chilly with highs in the mid-to-upper 40s. The latest data hints at an upper-level disturbance that will try to bring moisture into north and central Alabama Friday afternoon and evening. Moisture appears limited, but we could see a 30% chance for light rain/light snow showers for areas north of Interstate 20. It would not surprise me if we saw minor accumulations on grassy surfaces in elevated areas in north Alabama. The good news with this setup is that ground temperatures and surface temperatures will likely remain too warm to support ice or any major travel concerns. Use caution if you plan on traveling into far northeast Alabama or into parts of Tennessee Friday night. Limited moisture could linger across northeast Alabama early Saturday morning, but we should end up dry by sunrise.

Weekend Forecast: If you have any weekend plans for New Year’s Day, the weather is looking quiet. Saturday and Sunday are shaping up to be dry with a partly cloudy sky. Morning temperatures will likely drop into the lower 30s. Saturday afternoon will likely remain chilly with highs in the upper 40s.

New Year’s Eve Forecast(WBRC)

Temperatures may end up slightly warmer on New Year’s Eve with highs in the mid 50s. Cloud cover could increase on Sunday evening as another system approaches us next Monday.

New Year’s Day Forecast: I think we’ll celebrate the new year dry with temperatures in the upper 30s and lower 40s at 12 a.m. Monday. We’ll start the new year mostly cloudy with a 20% chance for a few showers. Models hint at a system developing in the Gulf of Mexico, but it looks like moisture will remain limited and to our south. We will have a better idea on our rain chances for the new year over the weekend. Temperatures will likely trend below average as we start the new year with highs in the upper 40s and lower 50s.
