David Unsworth believes Leighton Baines will be ‘crucial’ to Everton and their development of young players.
Baines was appointed professional development coach in September shortly after he announced his retirement from playing duties at the end of last season.
The former England international has been present at under-23 games in the new campaign and was spotted deep in conversation with centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite after the recent draw at Blackburn Rovers.
When asked about Baines’ role, u-23 manager Unsworth told the ECHO: “Leighton has been a great acquisition to the coaching staff.

“We’re really thankful Leighton is in this role because if anybody is going to go and do that individual work, Leighton is going to go and do it now.
“It’s fantastic that we’ve got another quality member of staff to add to the already existing staff members.
“I’m delighted with Leighton’s work so far and he’ll be crucial with all these young players moving forward. That’s his job.”
