Richard Madeley has made a declaration that has prompted Good Morning Britain viewers to compare him to the bumbling character Alan Partridge… yet again.
A few days ago, it was reported that a Royal Navy warship had shot down a suspected attack drone that was targeting merchant shipping in the Red Sea.
Defence secretary Grant Shapps said that air defence vessel HMS Diamond had ‘destroyed the target’ overnight, after cargo ships in waters off of the Arabian Peninsula had been targeted in attacks from a nearby territory held by Houthi rebels in Yemen.
The latest report came after a maritime security group said in early December that a UK-owned ship sailing through the Red Sea had been hit by rocket fire.
On Tuesday’s Good Morning Britain, presenter Richard gave his views on the attacks… before making what has been interpreted as a bizarre comparison to the Battle of the Atlantic throughout the Second World War.
The 67-year-old said: ‘Basically a bunch of warlords is coming out of Yemen into the Red Sea on board small boats and on drones, and they’re landing on tankers and terrorising the crew.

‘I just find it extraordinary that we could win the battle of the Atlantic against German U-boats and torpedoes, but we can’t seem to protect our shipping going up the Red Sea.’
GMB viewers immediately began comparing Richard to Steve Coogan’s character Alan Partridge, who’s known for his complete lack of ability to be adept at his profession as a broadcaster.
‘Alan Partridge back on GMB……🙄’ one person wrote on X, expressing their disdain with an eye-roll emoji.

‘Maximum partridge,’ someone else said, after the GMB broadcaster sparked comparisons to the fictional character on multiple occasions in the past.

Another individual tweeted: ‘What a fool. I despair,’ while someone else criticised how ‘ill-informed’ they believed the presenter’s assertion to be.
‘People like Madeley are secure on our morning telly shows in order to keep the national conversation & public opinion as dumb, angry & ill informed as possible,’ they said.
Others also pointed out that Richard referred to ‘we’ regarding the fighting in the Battle of the Atlantic… despite not even being born when the Second World War took place.
The Battle of the Atlantic took place from 1939 until 1945 and involved an Allied naval blockade of Germany, as the Royal Navy, the US Navy, the US Coast Guard, the Royal Canadian Navy and Allied merchant convoys joined forces.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.
