Dolphins’ epic collapse costs 1 survivor pool player a chance at $9.2 million

Dolphins #Dolphins

I’ve written a bunch about the Circa Sports $9.2 million NFL survivor pool — including this piece about how one contestant made it through thanks to the Minnesota Vikings’ 3-0 win — but Monday night was quite a night for the remaining entrants.

For those unfamiliar with NFL survivor contests, entrants have to pick one  team per week to win its game to advance to the next round, and the same team can’t be used twice.

Heading into the Monday Night Football games, there were 21 people remaining in the contest — seven had picked the Green Bay Packers (vs. the New York Giants) and one had the Miami Dolphins (vs. the Tennessee Titans). The Packers were 5.5-point road favorites, while the Dolphins were 13.5-point home favorites, so both teams were expected to win.

The Packers played a sloppy game, and ended up losing 24-22 to the Fighting Tommy DeVitos — I mean, New York Giants — on a last-second field goal by Randy Bullock. That knocked out seven more entries, leaving the contest with 14.

But the Dolphins topped that bad beat by going up 27-13 with under three minutes left in the game. Teams down 14 in that situation had won zero games out of the last 767 played, per ESPN Stats & Information.

Instead, the Dolphins allowed the Titans to march down the field for a touchdown … and score a two-point conversion … and get Miami to go three-and-out … and drive back down the length of the field for another TD … and stop the Dolphins’ final drive.

An absolutely miraculous comeback for the Titans, who ended up winning 28-27, and an absolutely gut-wrenching way to lose a survivor entry with an implied value of over $661,000.
