Red Wings’ Dylan Larkin leaves game after cross-check; Patrick Kane scores first goal.

Larkin #Larkin

Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin left Saturday’s game against Ottawa during the first period after being cross-checked in the head.

Larkin laid flat on the ice for a couple of minutes, prompting medical personnel to rush out and attend to him. A stretcher was wheeled onto the ice but Larkin managed to get to his knees and was skated off the ice with some assistance.

The play happened in front of the Senators net during a Detroit power play. Mathieu Joseph cross-checked Larkin in the head from behind and while he was bent over, Parker Kelly cross-checked him in the midseason from the other side.

It led to a melee during which David Perron cross-checked Artem Zub in the head and received a five-minute match penalty (automatic ejection). Joseph and Kelly each received minor roughing penalties.

Patrick Kane, in second game with the Red Wings, scored his first goal on the ensuing power play to tie it at 1-1.

Larkin and Joseph have a history. When Joseph played for Tampa Bay, he checked Larkin from behind into the glass on Oct. 14, 2021, in the season opener at Little Caesars Arena.

Larkin retaliated by punching Joseph in the face with his glove. He was suspended for one game. Joseph later called Larkin to apologize for the hit.
