Alan Jones lawyers taking ‘first steps’ towards defamation proceedings over indecent assault claims

Lawyers acting on behalf of former radio broadcaster Alan Jones say they are taking the “first step” in commencing defamation proceedings against Nine Newspapers and leading investigative journalist Kate McClymont.

Jones has strongly denied allegations he indecently assaulted four young men during this time at the helm of 2GB’s high-profile breakfast show.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported the men came forward with claims the radio titan had used his position of power to prey on men, allegedly groping, kissing or indecently assaulted them.

“The allegations against Alan Jones by Kate McClymont published today in the Nine newspapers are demonstrably false,” the statement on behalf of Jones read.

“In the short time available since publication we have obtained substantial factual information which contradicts and refutes the alleged pattern of conduct by Mr Jones.”

Mark O’Brien Legal, acting on behalf of Jones continued “we have retained Senior Counsel and have instructions to immediately serve a Concerns Notice under Section 12A of the Defamation Act as the first step in the commencement of defamation proceedings”.

Hadley sworn to secrecy

Long-term 2GB colleague Ray Hadley revealed live on air this morning he knew one of the alleged victims, who chose to go by the pseudonym “Bradley Webster”.

Hadley told his listeners the man, who had previously worked on Alan Jones’s show, divulged details of his experience with the broadcaster and swore him to secrecy.

“I sat silently as he went through the allegations… interrupted only by his tears as he tried to compose himself. I was a very emotional conversation for both of us.

“The behaviour he was alleging was unwanted sexual advances.”

Hadley said he offered to speak with 2GB management, but ‘Bradley’ didn’t want to lodge a complaint and asked him not to reveal what had been shared.

Hadley, who previously had a public falling out with Jones, described his 30-year relationship with his former colleague as “unusual” and one that had been “severed” after hearing of the allegations.

“I should point out, both the Sydney Morning Herald and 2GB are both owned by Nine Entertainment,” he told his listeners in conclusion.

Nine’s Managing Director of Radio Tom Malone emailed staff, describing the allegations made against the former 2GB host as “confronting”.

“The story may be distressing for current or former employees.”

Mr Malone said the company would “support anyone impacted historically or currently to resolve issues that may arise in their day-to-day roles” and pointed to the company’s anonymous reporting hotline.
