Dallas Cowboys news thus far this season has been akin to a dumpster fire GIF. It started back in Week 5 when franchise quarterback Dak Prescott suffered a devastating ankle injury on a scramble.

This came with Prescott potentially slated to cash in big time in free agency next March after drama defined his relationship with the Cowboys this past offseason. Now at 3-8 on the season, the Cowboys are in the midst of one of their worst stretches since 1989.

It’s not yet known when Prescott will return to the field. It’s also not yet known whether that will even be with the Cowboys. It’s in this environment that owner Jerry Jones’ latest comments on 105.3 The Fan will surely stir the pot.

“I’ve always handicapped, to some degree, Dak because of the fact that he’s so effective and has been in his career in the running game, and his ability to take it down and get the big play and get the yards,” Jones said. “I’ve always known that he couldn’t do that like that for long in the NFL. You can’t do that.”

Reading between the lines, it does not take a genius to realize that Jones might now be hesitant to hand Prescott a long-term deal with a ton of guaranteed cash.

He’s clearly putting the onus on Prescott changing his game to take into account the owner’s worn-out belief that mobile quarterbacks can’t last in the NFL over the long-term. Whether Jones meant to add to this narrative remains to be seen. But it’s clear that’s exactly what he did.

The question now becomes whether Dallas Cowboys news this coming offseason will pretty much all deal with the Prescott contract situation.

There’s other opportunities out there for both the Cowboys and their current franchise quarterback. Could the stars be aligning for an ugly divorce in Big D? Well, Jones’ comments might add some fuel to the fire in that regard.
