MLB.com is keeping track of all the latest news and rumors surrounding Padres outfielder Juan Soto.
Dec. 6: Could Soto-Yanks trade be coming soon?It appears we are getting close to a trade that sends Juan Soto to the Yankees.
According to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman, the deal is expected to be done “fairly soon,” with only “medicals and minor details” left to be ironed out.
Trade discussions between the two clubs reportedly stalled prior to the Winter Meetings as the Yankees balked at the Padres’ high asking price for the 25-year-old superstar. But MLB Network insider Joel Sherman wrote in the New York Post that momentum toward a trade has picked as the Yankees are now willing to include pitcher Michael King. A source confirms to MLB Network insider Jon Paul Morosi that King and pitcher Drew Thorpe (MLB Pipeline’s No. 99 prospect) have been included in proposals to San Diego. Curry believes the Yankees will ultimately part with four or five players.
Sherman reports that the “expectation” is a deal would include Padres outfielder Trent Grisham. The 27-year-old is under contract for two more seasons. Grisham has recorded a sub-.700 OPS in each of the past three seasons, but he is one of better defensive center fielders in baseball.
Dec. 5: Why the Yankees’ trade for Verdugo shouldn’t take them out of the Soto sweepstakes (report)Juan Soto has been in the middle of trade talks between the Yankees and Padres for weeks. After trade talks stalled over the proposed asking price, and following the Yankees’ trade for outfielder Alex Verdugo, one might think that Soto won’t be a fit in the Bronx. That might not be the case.
YES Network’s Jack Curry reports that “talks have reignited and intensified between the Yankees and the Padres.” Even with the acquisition of Verdugo, it doesn’t appear that it’ll preclude the Yanks from acquiring Soto, a sentiment shared by other prominent MLB reporters.
This would support Yankees general manager Brian Cashman’s remarks on Tuesday, when he said that the club is looking to add two left-handed-hitting outfielders.
