This year sees Manchester City try to defend their crown and claim a historic fourth title in succession. Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering City, who also won the Champions League and FA Cup last season, will have to see off Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and the rest to claim an unprecedented sixth league title in seven years.

Meanwhile Luton Town are making their first appearance in the Premier League, having risen from non-league in an incredible decade of progress. They followed Championship winners Burnley and second-placed Sheffield United in earning promotion to the top flight.

Follow the latest action from the Premier League below.

Manchester City FC 1 – 0 Liverpool FC

Manchester City vs Liverpool

13:33

Liverpool get the second half under way at the Etihad, with neither manager turning to their bench at the break. How will the Reds respond to falling behind?

Manchester City vs Liverpool

13:25

It has certainly not been one-way traffic here, with City managing five shots to Liverpool’s four, though the Reds have only hit the target once, compared to the hosts doing so four times. City are edging the xG (expected goals) battle 0.42 to 0.2, but Klopp has plenty of options if he wishes to shake up his attack in the second half.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

13:23

City lead Liverpool at the halfway point of the biggest game of the Premier League season to date! It’s that man Haaland who made the breakthrough, scoring his 50th goal in the English top flight by finding the bottom corner after being found in space by Ake 27 minutes in. The goal came from a rushed kick out by Alisson, who has been shaky throughout and almost gifted City two goals in the early stages. Many of Liverpool’s best moments have involved Szoboszlai, who teed up Nunez to prod wide after intercepting a loose pass from Akanji and also went close to laying on a goal for Jota. It’s still all to play for in the second half, which is coming up shortly!

Manchester City vs Liverpool

13:18

HALF-TIME: MANCHESTER CITY 1-0 LIVERPOOL.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

13:18

It’s a nervy moment for City as we enter one minute of first-half stoppage time! Jota is lurking as an overhit pass runs through to Ederson, just to the right of his goal. The goalkeeper somewhat bizarrely pushes it back into the danger zone, but a blue shirt is there to clear. That will be that for the first half!

Manchester City vs Liverpool

13:17

BIG SAVE! City go from back to front as Ederson picks out Silva with a clever pass into midfield. He turns to find Alvarez, who in turn picks out Foden in an inside-right position. The England man cuts inside before dragging a low shot towards the bottom-right corner, but Alisson gets down to tip it wide! Ake then commits a foul from the resulting corner.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

13:15

Great break! Silva shows lovely feet to turn on the edge of his own box before finding Doku, who carries the ball around 60 yards over halfway. He eventually offloads to Alvarez, but his chipped cross is too far ahead of Haaland at the back post. With a little more composure, City could have made it 2-0!

Manchester City vs Liverpool

13:14

Mac Allister sees a low shot blocked at close quarters, and it bounces to Szoboszlai on the right. He whips a brilliant cross towards the far post, but it’s just too high for Jota!

Manchester City vs Liverpool

13:13

Frustration for Liverpool. Alexander-Arnold steals possession from Doku before setting Liverpool off on the break. Salah slips a pass through for Nunez, but the flag is belatedly raised against the striker, who definitely went too soon. Five to go until half-time.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

13:12

Alexander-Arnold’s position is not quite as advanced as usual when Liverpool have the ball here, with the England man almost acting as more of a right-sided centre-back. The Reds knock the ball around patiently around halfway before Rodri steps in to recover possession for City.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

13:09

This is the sixth time Liverpool have conceded the first goal in an away Premier League game this season. They have recorded two wins, two draws and one defeat from the previous five – how will Klopp’s men respond this time around?

Manchester City vs Liverpool

13:08

CHANCE! Akanji is the most relieved man in the stadium after seeing his lacklustre pass picked off by Szoboszlai. He slips a little pass through for Nunez, but the angle is too tight for the Uruguay forward as he prods his effort under Ederson and wide.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

13:07

Now Ederson races from his line to punch Alexander-Arnold’s corner away. Liverpool have been well in this game, but they have repeatedly caused their own problems in defence.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

13:06

Good opening for Liverpool! Nunez brings down a sweeping pass from Alexander-Arnold amid claims of handball before bearing down on the edge of the area. He offloads to Salah on the right side of the box and the attack loses momentum as Ake gets back to make a vital challenge.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

13:04

Liverpool are on the ropes again as Doku steps infield before seeing a curling shot deflect wide for a corner. Alvarez’s resulting delivery is nodded away by Van Dijk, but City regain possession and can build another attack.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

13:03

That goal is also Haaland’s first against Liverpool in the Premier League! Brentford are now the only club he has faced in the competition without ever netting!

Manchester City vs Liverpool

13:02

Haaland has scored 50 Premier League goals in just 48 appearances in the competition, smashing Andy Cole’s record for the fewest games required to bring up a half-century – the Manchester United great needed 65 matches to reach that figure!

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:59

City’s first corner is flicked behind for another by Szoboszlai, then the hosts work the next set-piece short. Foden blasts at goal from outside the box, but it’s straight at Alisson.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:58

Goal Erling Braut Haaland

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:58

Doku might hold the key here for City. Another rapid break from the winger takes him to the corner of the area, but he cuts back past Alexander-Arnold to tee up Rodri, whose loose touch drains the momentum out of the attack. City do eventually win a corner on the left, however.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:57

Klopp and Guardiola have faced each other more often than they’ve faced any other managers across their respective careers, with this being their 29th meeting. Klopp’s 11 wins are the most by any manager against Guardiola, while Guardiola’s 10 victories are the most by any manager against the German.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:55

Liverpool deal with the City set-piece before breaking through Salah, and Alvarez pulls him back to stop the counterattack. The World Cup winner is slightly fortunate to avoid a booking for that clear tactical foul.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:54

Close! It’s the first time we’ve really seen Doku run at Alexander-Arnold, and the Belgian slows his opponent down before bursting past him brilliantly. Haaland stretches to reach his low cutback, but Alisson bravely dives at his feet to push it away before the ball deflects wide for a City corner.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:52

ACTION AT BOTH ENDS! Alisson gets lucky again as Jones plays an awkward pass back to him inside the Liverpool six-yard box. Haaland dives in in an attempt to prod the ball home, but Alisson’s rushed pass just rolls away to safety. Szoboszlai then leads a counter-attack, but the offside flag is raised when he sees a low shot blocked by Walker.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:51

Liverpool have just started to get a bit of joy in the last few minutes. Guardiola will be keen to see City rediscover their rhythm and establish control in midfield.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:49

Another promising moment for Liverpool! Szoboszlai finds space in midfield before slipping a throughball into the path of Nunez – who might have been offside. The Uruguayan takes too long to compose himself in any case, and Rodri gets back to get a foot in.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:48

GREAT SAVE, but the whistle had gone anyway! Matip steps out of defence to find Salah on the right-hand side, and he delivers a delicate cross on his left foot. Nunez glances it goalwards at the near post, only to see Ederson dive to his right to push it away. The referee penalises Liverpool as Jota attacks the rebound.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:47

Matip plays himself into trouble under pressure from Doku and Haaland, with the Belgian eventually chopping back onto his right foot to cross from the left. Foden and Alvarez are both lurking, but Tsimikas gets back with a good defensive header to clear the danger.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:45

Liverpool enjoy a spell on the ball, looking to calm things down after that early scare. Jones looks for Salah with a booming long pass, but Ake races across to intercept – that will be a key battle over on the visitors’ right.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:44

It’s fair to say the champions have made their home a fortress lately. City have won their last 23 home games in all competitions – victory here would see them equal the record for an English top-flight club, currently held by Sunderland between December 1890 and April 1892 (24, which includes a replayed victory over Notts County in the FA Cup).

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:43

HUGE ESCAPE FOR LIVERPOOL! What is Alisson doing? The Brazil goalkeeper turns in his own six-yard box before playing a dreadful pass straight into the feet of Foden. Van Dijk is on the scene to put pressure on the England international, who drags a weak finish into Alisson’s arms. Liverpool get lucky.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:41

City have enjoyed plenty of the possession early on, but Liverpool are willing to engage them high up the pitch. It’s Jones joining Nunez to press from the front, with Salah and Jota wide in something resembling a 4-4-2 when the Reds aren’t on the ball.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:40

Akanji combines with Silva to send Haaland running down the left-hand channel, but Alexander-Arnold does brilliantly to stick with the Norwegian and force him wide. Haaland keeps the ball in play for Doku with a neat backheel, but the Belgian is eventually crowded out by red shirts. As we all expected, it has been a high-octane start.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:38

It’s always fascinating to see how Guardiola and Klopp set up for these head-to-head clashes. For the moment, Akanji does seem to be replicating Stones’ usual role for City, stepping into midfield alongside Rodri when the hosts have possession. It will be interesting to see if Alexander-Arnold does the same for Liverpool.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:37

Akanji steps into midfield for City to spray the ball out to Silva, who pulls left to cross towards Haaland, but his delivery is just too deep for the Norwegian and Liverpool survive.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:36

These two teams have won the last six Premier League titles between them, also reaching a combined five UEFA Champions League finals in the last six years. It’s always one of the biggest occasions of the season when they meet – what will they serve up this time around?

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:35

Mac Allister falls awkwardly after leaping over Silva in a bid to win a header in midfield, but fortunately for Liverpool, he’s quickly back to his feet. This game will be a huge test of the Argentine’s defensive abilities in his new number six role.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:34

It’s a fast start for City as Doku breaks down the left-hand side before sending in a low cross, but Matip slices a clearance away. The hosts come again through Silva, but Matip is again well placed to snuff out the danger. Liverpool are sure to face plenty of pressure on the right side of their defence.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:32

We’re under way for the next instalment in one of the Premier League’s most absorbing rivalries! Silva gets the ball rolling for the champions!

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:28

This will be the fourth time City and Liverpool have met in the Premier League while starting the day as the top two in the table. How far could this game go towards deciding the destination of the title? The players are out on the pitch amid a brilliant atmosphere in Manchester – kick-off is imminent!

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:24

Klopp, meanwhile, makes two alterations to the Liverpool side which thrashed Brentford 3-0 at Anfield last time out. Mac Allister is available after serving a one-match ban, so he replaces Endo in the holding midfield role, while Jones returns after recovering from a thigh issue, meaning Gakpo drops to the bench. Gomez, Konate and Gravenberch are also among the substitutes after recovering from knocks.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:20

Guardiola makes just one change to the City team which started the 4-4 draw at Chelsea prior to the break, with Ake replacing Gvardiol after overcoming a knock. Haaland and Ederson are also fit to start after suffering injury scares during the last fortnight, while Stones is on the bench despite being expected to miss out. Jack Grealish is ill, so Guardiola will look to Doku to stretch the play on the left-hand side.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:16

LIVERPOOL SUBS: Joe Gomez, Wataru Endo, Ibrahima Konate, Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Harvey Elliott, Ryan Gravenberch, Caoimhin Kelleher, Jarell Quansah.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:08

Liverpool, meanwhile, have been building momentum since their pre-season overhaul, and Jurgen Klopp’s side are looking to make a statement of their title ambitions here. The Reds begin this game just one point adrift of City at the summit, with their only Premier League defeat of 2023-24 coming when they were reduced to nine men – and had a legitimate goal incorrectly disallowed by the VAR – at Tottenham in September. However, Liverpool have only won on one of their last 14 league visits to this stadium, with that triumph coming on Klopp’s first trip here with the club in November 2015!

Manchester City vs Liverpool

12:04

The Premier League is back with a bang after the international break as the top two face off at the Etihad! Manchester City have not always been at their sparkling best this season, suffering defeats at Wolves and Arsenal and playing out a thrilling 4-4 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last time out, but they emerge from the hiatus looking to establish a four-point gap to the side Pep Guardiola sees as their closest rivals. City had a few fitness concerns ahead of this huge game, but they have received a massive double boost with Ederson and Erling Haaland being passed fit to start!
