Satya Nadella Hires Sam Altman As CEO Of Unnamed AI Project; Elon Musk Gives A Cheeky Reaction
Satya #Satya
What a whirlwind of a weekend in AI! Sam Altman, who was abruptly sacked as CEO by the OpenAI board on Friday, is now being inducted into Microsoft, which is one of the largest investors in the parent company of ChatGPT. He will be the CEO of a brand new group within Microsoft! Boss Satya Nadella took to Twitter, announcing Sam Altman and Greg Brockman’s new stints at the Windows maker company. Requoting his tweet, Sam Altman remarked, ‘The Mission Continues,’ to which Satya Nadella further responded, stating his excitement to have the former OpenAI CEO on board. He further wrote that at Microsoft, founders and innovators are given space to build their independent identities and cultures within the company, including its other acquisitions—GitHub, Mojang Studios, and professional networking platform LinkedIn.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk reacted with a cheeky remark about Sam joining Microsoft. He wrote that now they (OpenAI) will have to use Teams (for meetings). For the uninitiated, OpenAI fired Altman in a Google Meet meeting. The company has a significant investment from Microsoft, yet the AI company uses a product from a rival.
Here’s how the rest of the internet is reacting to the latest episode in the Silicon Valley AI sitcom:
Microsoft appointed OpenAI co-founders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman to lead a new advanced AI research team. This move comes after OpenAI’s board decided to dismiss Altman, leading to protests and departures by many OpenAI members. Altman and Brockman, along with new colleagues, are set to form this advanced AI research team at Microsoft. Nadella emphasized Microsoft’s commitment to supporting OpenAI, a startup in which Microsoft has invested over $10 billion and holds almost 50% ownership. Despite Altman not being reinstated as OpenAI’s CEO, there were discussions about his possible return and potential changes to the company’s governance structure. Emmett Shear, former Twitch boss, has been appointed interim CEO at OpenAI. While there were efforts to bring Altman back after his abrupt dismissal, the decision not to reinstate him has raised concerns about a potential talent exodus and the impact on an upcoming $86 billion share sale. Meanwhile, Altman and Brockman joined Microsoft to spearhead a new AI research initiative. The details of Altman’s role at Microsoft remain a key focus, with indications that he may lead a team dedicated to advanced AI research.
Reacting to Satya’s post, Greg Brockman wrote that they are going to build something new and incredible. He also tagged the initial leadership team for the brand new project at Microsoft, which includes Sam Altman, Jakub Pachocki, Szymon Sidor, and Aleksander Madry
