Ahead of this season’s NFL trade deadline, the Denver Broncos reportedly refuted offers from contending teams looking to acquire their best defensive player.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Broncos “never considered dealing” star cornerback Patrick Surtain II. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio noted that the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles were among the teams that explored the possibility of trading for Surtain.

Florio added that the Broncos wouldn’t trade Surtain “without a major haul” because they see him “as someone who checks every box.” Schefter reiterated that notion, saying, ” Those around the organization believe he is the most talented [cornerback] they ever have been around.”

A Pro Bowler and first-team All-Pro in 2022, Surtain has 30 total tackles, eight passes defended and one interception this season. The 2021 No. 9 pick is likely in line for a major extension when he becomes eligible.

After trading veteran edge rusher Randy Gregory to the San Francisco 49ers for a seventh-round pick, the Broncos were believed to be on the verge of a fire sale. However, Denver didn’t make any additional moves at the trade deadline despite receiving interest from across the league for multiple players.

While Surtain was never on the table for other teams, many expected the Broncos to make receivers Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton available after a disappointing start to the 2023 season. Denver stood pat after earning back-to-back wins before the trade deadline over the Green Bay Packers and the AFC West rival Kansas City Chiefs.

The Broncos are hoping to keep the momentum going after their bye week as they visit the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football.
