‘The Garfield Movie’ Trailer Teases New Era of Lasagna-Loving Cat Featuring Chris Pratt, Samuel L. Jackson

Garfield #Garfield

Chris Pratt has traded in his plumber uniform for something with a little more fur in the first trailer for Columbia Pictures and Alcon Entertainment’s The Garfield Movie.

The famous lasagna-loving cat is back with Pratt as the man behind the whiskers in this nearly three-minute look (below) at the movie based on Jim Davis’ famous Garfield comic series.

The film sees Garfield, “the world-famous, Monday-hating, lasagna-loving indoor cat,” setting out on a wild, outdoor adventure following an unexpected reunion with his long-lost father, a scruffy street cat named Vic who’s voiced by Samuel L. Jackson. With his canine friend Odie at his side, Garfield is forced from his perfectly pampered life into joining his father for a comedic, high-stakes heist.

The trailer teases a tail of an abandoned kitten fighting to survive on the streets until he sees Jon Arbuckle, a lonely man eating a pizza, through a restaurant window. The doe-eyed kitten is eventually invited in by Jon for a treat — and ends up devouring the entire restaurant. “And that’s how I adopted Jon,” Pratt’s Garfield tells the audience.

The rest of the trailer follows Garfield as he juggles the indignities of being Jon’s cat — baths and blow dries — with his insatiable appetite. “I apologize in advance. The eating you are about to see will not be pretty,” Garfield says. “If you have young children, this would be a good time for them to leave the room.”

There’s also the surprise reunion with Vic “my father,” Garfield puts in air quotes. The remainder of the trailer sees the two cats and dog Odie barely surviving a speeding train car, RV, moose and tree before the indoor cat brings Vic back to Jon’s for a taste of city life.

Hannah Waddingham, Ving Rhames, Nicholas Hoult, Cecily Strong, Harvey Guillén, Brett Goldstein and Bowen Yang also star in the animated film directed by Mark Dindal with a screenplay by Paul A. Kaplan and Mark Torgove, and David Reynolds.

The movie counts John Cohen, Broderick Johnson, Andrew A. Kosove, Steven P. Wegner, Craig Sost, Namit Malhotra and Crosby Clyse as its team of producers. Davis and Reynolds, along with Bridget McMeel, Scott Parish, Carl Rogers, Simon Hedges, Chris Pflug, Louis Koo, Steve Sarowitz, Justin Baldwin and Peter Luo, all serve as executive producers. DNEG Animation animated the film.

The Garfield Movie hits theaters May 24, 2024.
