LAS VEGAS (AP) — When the New York Jets visit Las Vegas on Sunday, there should be more clarity regarding the direction of both teams this season.

The Jets enter the game at 4-4, so a win helps their postseason hopes. A loss makes a playoff scenario much more difficult in the loaded AFC.

At 4-5, the Raiders also hope to tread water under interim coach Antonio Pierce, who won his debut game last Sunday after replacing Josh McDaniels, defeating the New York Giants 30-6 to inject life into the season — and a heavy dose of postgame cigar smoke thanks to Maxx Crosby.

Whether that emotion — and execution — carries over to this week remains to be seen. If not, the Raiders’ hopes for making an unexpected playoff run are all but over.

“The NFL is a week-to-week basis,” Crosby said. “There’s coaching changes, player changes, things like that, but the teams that win are the teams that stay locked in and stay together and stay healthy. Luckily, we’re in a position where if we win the game, we’re back to .500 going into the real heart of the season.”

OFFENSIVE OFFENSE

Zach Wilson and the Jets’ offense can’t seem to do much right this season. And that might be an understatement.

They have just three touchdowns in their past four games and the offense has just eight overall in eight games. New York ranks last in the NFL in third down percentage and red zone conversion percentage.

Meanwhile, the Jets’ defense has been solid all season and kept New York in games.

“We have to be better for them,” Wilson said. “I don’t know if I’d say we feel pressure, but we need to do something. We need to score points. It’s not good enough, and we understand that. I wouldn’t say pressure, because I think as an offense, we know it’s close, and it sucks, because we keep saying ‘close.’ I get sick of that, I know everyone else does, too, but it’s like we really are.”

MARQUEE MATCHUP

As one of the NFL’s top receivers, Davante Adams is used to seeing a variety of defenses, but little man to man.

Could the Jets, with star cornerbacks Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed, be willing to play Adams in single coverage more than most opponents? Gardner, in particular, lived up to the hype last season by being selected as the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year and a first-team AP All-Pro.

Such accolades didn’t impress Adams, who has made that team the past three seasons.

“He’s a good player for sure,” Adams said. “He’s got a good tape and has got a lot of good measurables. He’s deserving of the attention that he’s gotten for sure since he’s been in league, but bringing up the first-team All-Pro and all that, you’ve got to line it up every snap at the end of the day. So the past accomplishments don’t mean anything for anybody, but especially in this instance.”

QUINNEN’S EFFECT

Quinnen Williams had a huge season last season for the Jets, setting a career high with 12 sacks while being selected an All-Pro and a Pro Bowler for the first time.

It earned him a four-year, $96 million contract extension, including $66 million guaranteed, in the offseason to make him one of the highest-paid defensive tackles in the league.

So far this season, though, the sacks haven’t come. He enters the game against the Raiders with just a half-sack — but coach Robert Saleh insists that doesn’t tell the story of the frequently double-teamed Williams’ season.

“Teams are going out of their way to game plan Quinnen to try to take him out of the game, but he’s still absolutely wrecking run games,” Saleh said. “He ranks top five in every statistical category you can conjure up. He’s just not getting the sack production. … Quinnen Williams is one of the top-five defensive players in all of football and he’s proving it down-in and down-out.”

CONTAINING CROSBY

After allowing eight sacks to the Los Angeles Chargers, the Jets might have their sixth offensive line combination in nine games on Sunday night.

And the five guys up front will be tasked with trying to slow Crosby, who’s tied for second in the NFL with 9½ sacks this season and is coming off a three-sack performance against the Giants.

“That dude’s a great player,” Wilson said. “An unbelievable player, all the way across the board.”

Billy Turner, who started at right tackle against the Chargers, won’t play after needing surgery to repair a broken finger. Max Mitchell could start in his place and perhaps Xavier Newman at right guard. Left tackle Duane Brown, who hasn’t played since Week 2 with a hip injury, has fully practiced since being cleared last week but won’t be activated from IR this week.

JETS PLAYER TO WATCH: QB Zach Wilson. New York is sticking with the third-year quarterback despite the offense’s struggles. Coach Robert Saleh has insisted there’s no mandate from anyone within the organization to play Wilson, who has five TDs and five INTs this season on an offense that ranks among the league’s worst. But if Wilson and the offense can’t do much against the Raiders, the call for a change at quarterback will get even louder.

RAIDERS PLAYER TO WATCH: RB Josh Jacobs. Interim coach Antonio Pierce said he expected both teams to rely on the run, so watch for Las Vegas to try to establish a physical presence. The Raiders did that against the Giants, and Jacobs had his best game of the season in rushing for 98 yards. Especially with rookie quarterback Aidan O’Connell going against an elite pass defense, Jacobs should get plenty of opportunities.

KEY MATCHUP: Raiders WR Davante Adams vs. Jets CBs Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed. Not many cornerbacks can play Adams one on one, but the New York duo might be able to do just that. The Jets likely will send their share of double teams at Adams as well, but it’s the individual matchups that will be most worth watching.

KEY INJURIES: Jets OT Duane Brown (hip) had his 21-day practice window to be activated from IR started last week. He fully practiced all week, but won’t play. … New York OL Billy Turner broke a finger against the Chargers and was ruled out. … Rookie edge rusher Will McDonald injured an ankle Thursday and was questionable … Raiders linebacker Divine Deablo missed the last two games because of ankle injury, but was removed from the injury report after practicing on a limited basis Thursday and Friday. … LB Luke Masterson, who didn’t play against the Giants because of a concussion, fully practiced all week and is off the injury report. … LT Kolton Miller (shoulder) didn’t practice all week and is doubtful. … CB Marcus Peters (knee) and FB Jakob Johnson (concussion) were questionable.

SERIES NOTES: The Raiders took advantage of an all-out Jets blitz in the most recent meeting when Derek Carr completed a 46-yard touchdown pass to Henry Ruggs with 5 seconds left. The Jets fired defensive coordinator Gregg Williams the following day. … The Raiders have won three of the past four meetings. … They are 15-6-1 against the Jets in home games. … This is the first meeting in Las Vegas.

STATS AND STUFF: The game marks the fourth prime-time game in which the Jets will play this season, and second on a Sunday night. They lost to Kansas City 23-20 at home in Week 4. … The Jets have scored just eight touchdowns on offense in eight games, including five TD passes by Wilson, two TD runs by Breece Hall and another by Nick Bawden. … Nathaniel Hackett’s offense ranks last in the NFL in third down conversion rate (22.2%) and last in red zone conversion rate (24%). … Wilson had season highs last Monday night against the Chargers in completions (33), attempts (49) and yards passing (263), but was sacked eight times and lost two fumbles. The 33 completions were also a career best. … Hall’s 5.2 yards per attempt are tied with Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson for fourth best in the NFL. … New York hasn’t allowed a 300-yard passer in 26 games. It’s the second-longest active streak in the NFL behind New Orleans (29). … Edge rusher Bryce Huff has a team-leading five sacks this season and has taken down the quarterback at least once in four straight games. … Rookie edge rusher Will McDonald, the team’s first-round pick in April, got the first half-sack of his career against the Chargers. … K Greg Zuerlein has made at least one field goal in 25 straight games, the longest such active streak in the NFL. He has also connected on 30 consecutive field goals from within 50 yards, the longest streak of his career and the second-longest active run in the league. … Like with the Jets, the Raiders have been regulars on prime time this season. This is Las Vegas’ fourth such game, and the Raiders are 1-2 with the victory over the Green Bay Packers and the losses to the Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions. The Raiders have one more prime-time game on the schedule — Dec. 14 at home against the Los Angeles Chargers. … After Las Vegas’ offense had gone nine games in a row without scoring at least 20 points, the Raiders went past that at halftime Sunday against the Giants. The Raiders finished with 30 points. … All-Pro RB Josh Jacobs, who led the league in rushing last season, has not gained at least 100 yards on the ground over his past 14 games. He actually hit that mark against the Giants, only to lose 3 yards on his final carry and drop to 98. … Las Vegas rarely gets beat deep. The Raiders have given up 15 passes of at least 20 yards, fewest in the NFL this season. … AJ Cole set an NFL single-game record with a gross punting average of 63.6 yards (minimum of four attempts) against the Giants. … DE Maxx Crosby’s 78 tackles for loss since 2019 are the most in the league over that time. … Aidan O’Connell can become the second Raiders QB to win two of his first three starts as a rookie. Mike Rae in 1976 is the only other one.

FANTASY TIP: Hall is a home run hitter who averages 5.2 yards per carry, tied with Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson for second best. Considering Las Vegas ranks near the bottom in allowing a 4.5-yard average, Hall could have an opportunity to put up big numbers.
